A gennaio è uscito il terzo album dei Diablo Blvd, ‘Follow the Deadlights’, un lavoro che mi ha colpito per bellezza e durezza e che mi ha spinto a mettermi sulle tracce della band belga. Dopo un lungo via vai tra mail inviate e richieste mai ricevute ecco finalmente che mi trovo in posta le riposte alle mie solite domande. Mi risponde il singer del gruppo Alex Agnew, potente cantante e ottimo affabulatore”… ecco il risultato della nostra chiacchierata”…

Prima di tutto complimenti per il vostro album, ‘Follow the Deadlights’, mi sono molto divertito all’ascolto e sinceramente adesso mentre scrivo queste domande lo sto ascoltando e mi piace davvero…
poi… ho un dubbio. In alvuni siti ho trovato che la data di pubblicazione dell’album risale al 9 maggio 2014 via Sony Music, ma l’album è uscito per la Nuclear Blast lo scorso 23 gennaio 2015 e poi ho visto una differente copertina (due donne e successivamente due leoni).
Mi aiuti a capire la cosa, notizia errata la mia, oppure una guerra fra etichette e solo una è sopravvissuta, oppure siete fuggiti durante la notte con in nastri originali… scherzo…

La risposta alla tua prima domanda è abbastanza semplice: prima di tutto abbiamo firmato un contratto con la Sony Benelux e pubblicato l’album il 9 maggio 2014. Grazie al successo in Belgio abbiamo firmato con la Nucelar Blast che ha pubblicato l’album il 23 gennaio 2015 in tutto il mondo.

e poi… perchè è cambiata la copertina (due leoni al posto delle due figure femminili)? C’è una chiave per interpretare i simboli della copertina ( se ce n’è una)?
Alex Agnew:
La copertina è cambiata per la pubblicazione internazionale per l’originale era troppo scura non abbastanza comprensibile per una band poco conosciuta. Il nostro logo ha sempre contenuto la figura di due donne (Eve and Lilith) che simboleggiano la luce e le tenebre, il bene e il male, la melodia e l’aggressione, etc… I leoni sono solo una variazione sul tema.

‘Follow the Deadlights’… bel titolo per un album… ‘dead lights’ e’day lights’, bel gioco di parole. Avete voluto davvero creare un titolo con un gioco di parole oppure è nata prima la canzone e avete deciso di dare il nome all’album, oppure…

Divertente… molte persone pensano che il titolo sia un gioco di parole, ma non abbiamo mai avuto questa intenzione. Il brano è sul controllo e della perdita di controllo a causa i qualcosa che finisce e poi ti distrugge. Il titolo è venuto prima del brano, cosa che capita spesso quando scrivo i testi. Il titolo di solito è il punto di partenza…

Melodie e suono molto duro… grande combinazione… per me gli ingredienti fondamentali di questo album sono la potenza e la passione. Sei d’accordo con me e cosa puoi aggiungere a riguardo?
Alex Agnew:
Sì, chiaramente d’accordo. Per tutti noi è sempre stato importante combinare melodia con durezza. E’ importante essere heavy, ma poi tutto gira intorno al brano.

Di cosa parlano i testi dei vostri brani? Ne ho letti alcuni, ma sono difficili da interpretare. Ad esempio ‘Beyond the Veil’ (che bel brano…), della title track mi hai già accennato qualcosa… o anche, c’è un’idea centrale che vi ha suggerito la composizione. Perdonami… troppe domande in una lo so…
Alex Agnew:
‘Beyond the Veil’ riguarda essenzialmente la morte. Ho una morbosa attrazione nei confronti della morte ed è un tema che ricorre spesso nei miei testi. Di solito scrivo tutto ciò che mi attrae (morte, religione, Satana…) o su ciò che mi irrita (politica, ipocrisia, religione, etc…).
L’idea centrale che sta dietro il gruppo è sempre stata l’attrazione verso la parte piùoscura delle cose. Non vogliamo aver limiti a livello musicale e di conseguenza nemmeno nei testi.

… com’è stato lavorare con Jay Ruston e Paul Logus (Anthrax, Stone Sour, Meat Loaf, Steel Panther, ndr) ?
Alex Agnew:
Mi sono imbattuto in Jay Ruston ascoltando in macchina ‘House of Gold and Bones’ degli Stone Sour ‘Worship Music’ degli Anthrax e mi sono entusiasmato sulle ottime sonorità di questi album. Andries ha subito scritto a Jay che ci ha risposto dopo pochi minuti mostrando il suo interesse nel lavorare con noi e poichè ha sempre lavorato in team con Paul Logus ecco fatto, ed ecco com’è successo.
E’ stato molto bello lavorare con loro e hanno fatto davvero un ottimo lavoro. Non posso essere piùche felice di tutto questo.

Un sogno che diventa realtà . Siamo la prima band belga ad aver firmato con questa etichetta leggendaria e siamo molto orgogliosi di questo.

Ci sono delle differenze e dei punti in comune con i precedenti ‘The Greater God’ e ‘Builders of Empires’?
Alex Agnew:
Credo che siamo sempre stati molto coerenti dal punto di vista delle sonorità , ma chiaro che ora siamo maturati come musicisti e compositori. Ogni album deve guardare piùlontano ed essere piùprofondo rispetto al precedente.

Diablo Blvd è spesso dipinta e messa in relazione a band tipo Black Label Society, Type O Negative, Corrosion of Conformity etc… Come vivete questa sorta di relazione e ovviamente quali sono le differenze fra voi e le band che ho appena citato?
Alex Agnew:
Adoriamo quelle band ed essere paragonati a loro per noi è un immenso onore. A volte siamo definiti come una southern metal band e non mi sono completamente d’accordo con questo paragone. Credo che abbiamo molti punti in comune con Danzig, Type-O-Negative, The Cult and Metallica piùche con altri. Ma le nostre radici sono i Black Sabbath, naturalmente.

Ho appena comprato il vinile, giallo, di ‘Follow the Deadlights’, sai a me piacciono i vinili e specialmente quelli particolari. Perchè la scelta di tutti questi formati: cd, cd + t-shirt, mp3, flac, vinile, vinile colorato… e perchè giallo? e picture disc? il mio muro del rock’n’roll sarebbe perfetto cin un vostro picture disc… ahahahah…

Giallo ci sembrava un buon colore… ahhaahah. Nessuna pianificazione alla base… anche sul picture disc nessun progetto, magari un giorno…

Il gurppo è composta da: Andries Beckers alla chitarra ritmica, Tim Bekaert al basso, Dave Hubrechts alla chitarra solista, Kris Martens alla batteria e da me, Alex Agnew, alla voce.
Ascoltiamo tutti i tipi di musica ma alcuni fra i nostri gruppi preferiti sono: Metallica, Danzig, Cro-Mags, Life of Agony, Monster Magnet, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Type-O-negative, Guns’n’Roses, Behemoth, Morbid Angel, Amon Amarth, Grand Magus, Immortal, Megadeth,The Doors, Elvis, etc”… troppi per essere menzionati tutti…
Abbiamo iniziato 10 anni fa perchè abbiamo avuto la percezione che nessuno stesse proponendo piùil tipo di musica che ci piaceva e poichè abbiamo tante influenze musicali il risultato della nostra musica a e sonorità e questo attuale…

E’ difficile essere una band proveniente dal Belgio in un mondo dominato da gruppi provenienti principalmente dagli USA, Inghilterra, Germania e Svezia?
Alex Agnew:
Sì. Il Belgio è uno stato molto piccolo e i media non sono orientati verso la musica metal. E’ anche difficile per le band del Belgio iniziare una carriera internazionale e io credo che noi lo stiamo facendo abbastanza bene. Bisogna lavorare ancora piùduramente quando provieni da un posto molto piccolo.

Avete pianificato o state pianificando di promuovere il nuovo album e la vostra musica in genere?
Alex Agnew:
Siamo stati di recente in tour in Europa con Machine Head, Life of Agony ed Epica. Ci saranno altri tour e suoneremo in molti festival estivi.

Hey Francesco, I’m Alex, the singer of Diablo Blvd and I will be answering your questions today. Thanks for your kind words about our album. We’re very proud of it ourselves!
The answer to your first question is quite simple: first we singned to Sony for the Benelux and released our album on the 9th of may 2014. Thanks to the domestic success of our album we were then signed to Nuclear blast, who chose to release our album worldwide on the 23rd of January.

second… and why the art cover is changed (two girls – two lions) ? is there a interpretative key to understand the symbols of this sleeve (if there are any)?
Alex Agnew:
The cover art was changed for our international release because our original sleeve was too dark and not visible enough for an unknown band. Our band logo has always been two women (Eve and Lilith) symbolizing light and darkness, good and evil, melody and aggression, etc”… The lions are just a variation on that theme.

‘Follow the Deadlights’… nice name for an album. ‘dead lights’ and ‘day lights’, nice play on words… did you really want to give the album this name using this play on words, or the song was born first and then you decided to, or”…
Alex Agnew:
Funny, a lot of people seem to think that the title is a play on words, while that was never our intention. The song is about control and losing it to something beautiful that ends up destroying you. The title came before the song, which is often the case when I write lyrics. The title is usually the starting point.

Melodies and strong sound… great combination… in my opinion the most important ingredients of this album with power, passion… do you agree with me and what it is possible to add”…
Alex Agnew:
I certainly agree. For us as a band it has always been very important to combine melody with aggression. It’s important to be heavy, but in the end it’s all about the song!

What do the songs talk about? I read some of your lyrics… a bit difficult to be untrerstood (by me)… for example what about ‘Beyond the Veil’ (what a song….), or what about the title track… or better, is there a central idea that suggested you the composition? forgive me, too many questions in one, I know…
Alex Agnew:
‘Beyond the Veil’ is basically about dying! I have a perhaps unhealthy fascination with death and it is a recurring theme in my lyrics. I usually write about either what fascinates me (death, religion, Satan,”…) or what irritates me (politics, hypocrites, religion, etc”…).
The central idea behind this band has always been a fascination for the darker side of things. We try not to limit ourselves musically and the same is true as far as lyrical content is concerned.

…and what about the songwiting? The main ideas of the songs ware created by one of you or everything was conceived in studio? and how long did you stay in studio?
Alex Agnew:
The majority of the songs are written by our guitar player Andries Beckers, although Bassist Tim and lead guitarist Dave have also contributed songs. All lyrics and a great deal of the vocal melodies are written by me. For this album, Andries and I worked closely together at his home studio and later we recorded all our songs in pre-production before actually entering the studio.

…and what about working with Jay Ruston and Paul Logus?
Alex Agnew:
I came across Jay Ruston when I was listing to “House of Gold and Bones” by Stone Sour and “Worship Music” by Anthrax in my car and was blown away by how good both albums sounded. Andries promptly mailed Jay and he responded within minutes! Jay was very interested and always works with Paul Logus as a team, so that’s how it happened.
They were great to work with and did an awesome job. I couldn’t be happier!

Is pretty much a dream come true! We’re also the first Belgian band ever to be signed to this legendary label, so we’re very proud of that!

Are there any differences and similar points thinking of your previous releases ‘The Greater God’ and ‘Builders of Empires’?
Alex Agnew:
I think that we’ve always been true to our sound, but we’ve very much matured as musicians and songwriters. Every album just goes further and deeper than the previous one.

Diablo Blvd is drawn close to such bands as Black Label Society, Type O Negative, Corrosion of Conformity etc… How do you live this sort of comparison and what are the main differences between you and the bands I’ve just mentioned?
Alex Agnew:
We love all of these bands and being compared to them is a huge honor. We sometimes get called a southern metal band, and I don’t especially agree with that assessment. I personally think we have more in common with bands like Danzig, Type-O-Negative, The Cult and Metallica than anything else. Our roots are, of course, Black Sabbath!

I have just bought ‘Follow the Deadlights’ yellow vinyl, because I like vinyl and especially particular ones… why the choice of having all these formats: cd, cd + t-shirt, mp3, flac, vinyl, and yellow one… and why yellow?… any picture discs? my wall of rock’n’roll would be perfect with ‘Follow the Deadlights’ picture disc”… ahhahah
Alex Agnew:
Yellow just seemed like a good color! Ha! Ha! No big plan behind it! As far as that picture disc is concerned”… maybe some day!

This is the first time I’ve got the chance to talk to you, please, could you tell me something of the band, its members and music you use to listen to, when and how did you understand it was the right moment to start a band and so on?
Alex Agnew:
The band is Andries Beckers on rhythm guitar, Tim Bekaert on bass, Dave Hubrechts on lead guitar, Kris Martens on drums and me (Alex Agnew) on vocals.
We listen to all kinds of music, but some of our favorite bands are: Metallica, Danzig, Cro-Mags, Life of Agony, Monster Magnet, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Type-O-negative, Guns’n’Roses, Behemoth, Morbid Angel, Amon Amarth, Grand Magus, Immortal, Megadeth,The Doors, Elvis, etc”… Too many to mention!
We started the band ten years ago because we had the feeling that no one was making the kind of music we really liked anymore. Because our influences are so varied, our sound kind of followed.

Is it difficult being a band from Belgium in heavy metal world dominated by bands from USA, England, Germany and Sweden principally ?
Alex Agnew:
Yes. Belgium is a very small county and the media here is not metal-minded at all. It’s also very hard for Belgian bands to start an international career, but I think we’re doing quite well!
I guess you just have to work harder and prove yourself more when you’re from a small county.

Did you plan or are you planning concerts to promote your new album and your music in general?
Alex Agnew:
We’ve recently toured Europe with Machine Head, Life of Agony and Epica. There are more tours on the way and we will be playing lots of summer festivals.
