Intervista con Jennie-Ann Smith degli Avatarium: la bellezza nell’oscurità 

La band svedese degli Avatarium è appena tornata sul mercato discografico con un nuovo album intitolato “Hurricanes And Halos” (Nuclear Blast), eccellente successore di quel “The Girl With The Raven Mask” che due anni fa li aveva imposti all’attenzione del pubblico come una delle piùinteressanti ed originali realtà  della scena rock europea.

Abbiamo raggiunto per voi l’affascinante cantante del gruppo Jennie-Ann Smith che, con grande disponibilità  e gentilezza, ha accettato di rispondere alle nostre domande. Ecco cosa ci ha raccontato.

LLRNR: Ciao Jennie-Ann e benvenuta a LongLiveRockNRoll. Parliamo subito del vostro nuovo album “Hurricanes and Halos“: che cosa si nasconde dietro questo titolo? Che cosa rappresentano questi “uragani e aureole”?

JENNIE-ANN: Anche se non siamo una band politica, il titolo “Hurricanes and Halos“ vuole essere una riflessione sullo stato attuale del mondo. Di questi tempi, è sotto gli occhi di tutti il fatto di come il potere consenta alle persone di fare del male nel nome di una buona causa. L’obiettivo delle autorità , siano esse religiose, politiche o culturali, è sempre quello di manipolare e creare paura nei nostri cuori. Sembra che ci stiamo abituando al fatto che una certa politica di destra prenda il sopravvento, ma questo è un pensiero orribile ed in nessun caso dovremmo mai accettare che questo diventi “normale”.

LLRNR: C’è un vecchio cliché nel mondo musicale, secondo il quale l’ultimo album di una band è sempre il migliore. Il vostro precedente lavoro “The Girl With The Raven Mask” aveva guadagnato consensi un po’ in tutto il mondo e anche noi di LLRNR lo avevamo celebrato come una delle migliori uscite del 2015. E’ stata sicuramente una grande sfida dare a quell’album il giusto seguito: cosa devono attendersi fans e ascoltatori da “Hurricanes and Halos“? Un lavoro in linea con l’album precedente o qualcosa di invece nuovo e particolare?

JENNIE-ANN: Penso che non riuscirei mai a fare lo stesso medesimo disco piùe piùvolte: parlo per me, ma credo che questo pensiero sia condiviso anche dagli altri ragazzi della band. Il nostro obiettivo è quello di fare musica che piaccia prima di tutto a noi e credo che la nostra sia stato una progressione del tutto naturale. Quando abbiamo discusso di come avrebbe dovuto essere l’album, abbiamo voluto comporre un lavoro che potesse riempire in modo completo il nostro live set. Alcuni up-tempo, altri brani piùdiretti… è stato del tutto naturale per noi muoverci in questa direzione.

LLRNR: Adoro sinceramente i testi delle vostre canzoni: ogni brano sembra come raccontarci una storia e possiamo quasi vederne i personaggi prendere vita davanti ai nostri occhi, proprio come in un film. Potresti dirci qualcosa a proposito dei testi di questo nuovo album? Avete nuovamente affrontato tematiche correlate al soprannaturale o avete provato ad esplorare alcuni temi legati maggiormente alla vita quotidiana?

JENNIE-ANN: Il piùgrande regalo che un cantautore possa ricevere è quando una persona riesce a relazionarsi in maniera del tutto personale con i suoi testi. Intendo dire come un ascoltatore venga portato dal testo di un brano a riflettere sulla propria vita e sulle emozioni che questo possa scatenare in lui. Ho letto tempo fa una bella intervista con Joni Mitchell – uno dei miei idoli ”“ nella quale affermava che una volta che un autore comincia a spiegare alle persone di cosa parla una canzone, il pubblico non riesce piùa riconoscersi in essa ma solo a vederne l’interpretazione di chi l’ha scritta. Quindi, se dovessi dire qualcosa a proposito dei testi degli Avatarium mi limiterei a dire che sono scritti in maniera efficace e soggetti a varie interpretazioni. Dipende dall’ascoltatore interpretarli e capire come relazionarsi con essi.

LLRNR: Ci sono alcune canzoni in questo nuovo album che ti piacciono in maniera particolare o che ritieni abbiano qualcosa di speciale di cui vorresti parlarci? Sono molto curioso, per esempio, di sapere come è stata costruita la canzone “Medusa Child“…

JENNIE-ANN: Amo tutte le canzoni del disco in realtà , quindi sarebbe impossibile per me sceglierne una sola, anche perché insieme costituiscono un flusso unico lungo tutto l’album. Per quanto riguarda “Medusa Child“, devo ammettere di essere andata un po’ in ansia la prima volta che sentii la parte iniziale della canzone che era stata scritta da Leif (Edling-ndr), perché era in una tonalità  del tutto differente dal solito e quindi abbiamo dovuto riflettere a lungo per capire come lavorare sugli arrangiamenti. In particolare sulla mia interpretazione del testo e sulla tecnica vocale utilizzata. Ci è quindi voluto un po’ per rimettere insieme tutti i pezzi e anche poi per elaborare la lunga e complicata parte strumentale posta in chiusura del brano. Ma è una canzone davvero unica e credo che sia venuta fuori veramente bene.

LLRNR: E che mi dici di “Road To Jerusalem“? La canzone è legata al tema biblico o ad altro?

JENNIE-ANN: Ricollegandomi a quanto detto prima, preferisco non entrare nello specifico. Puoi pensare a questa canzone come ad una metafora. Può trattarsi di un luogo dove si raggiunge il proprio personale appagamento, ma il brano può essere interpretato anche in modo religioso o politico. Io so cosa significa per me, ma il testo rimane aperto a varie interpretazioni.

LLRNR: “ When Breath Turns To Air” sembra trattare l’argomento della vita spirituale dopo la morte…

JENNIE-ANN: La canzone è stata registrata dopo la morte del padre di Marcus Jidell e ci ha toccato un po’ tutti nel profondo. Io poi lavoro anche come assistente dei malati di cancro e quindi ha avuto per me un significato ancor piùparticolare, che ha contribuito a farmi vedere le cose in un’ottica differente. E’ un pensiero di conforto: “quando il respiro si trasformerà  in aria, io sarò ovunque”.

LLRNR: Qual è il ruolo attuale di Leif Edling nella band? Sappiamo che ha partecipato alla fase del songwriting ma che non è piùnella line up degli Avatarium, anche perché ha dato vita ad un nuovo progetto musicale chiamato The Doomsday Kingdom. Pensi che Leif continuerà  a dare il suo contributo agli Avatarium in futuro o si tratta invece di un capitolo chiuso?

JENNIE-ANN: Leif non è mai stato in tour con noi, quindi non si è trattato di un cambiamento così drammatico per quest’album. Anche sull’album precedente del resto non aveva suonato il basso su tutte le canzoni. Ma ci riteniamo comunque molto fortunati, perchè Leif è uno dei piùgrandi songwriter sulla piazza e il suo lavoro si sposa alla perfezione con la mentalità  “artigianale” degli Avatarium; quindi tutto quello che posso dire è che sono estremamente onorata di lavorare con lui e di ritrovarmi in questa situazione musicale.

LLRNR: Conosciamo molte cose sulla carriera di Marcus Jidell, ma il tuo passato musicale è invece ancora un mistero per noi. Potresti raccontarci qualcosa di te? Dove si nascondeva questo puro diamante vocale prima di unirsi agli Avatarium?

JENNIE-ANN: Haha, mi piace essere e rimanere un mistero”… (ammicca-ndr). Ho iniziato a cantare in giovane età  e ho capito subito che la musica era la mia passione, ma non l’ho mai considerata come una carriera lavorativa. Sono stata in tour con diversi artisti qui in Svezia, ma parlando di hard rock questo è il mio debutto. Ma la musica di buona qualità  è musica di buona qualità  per me, non importa di quale genere si tratti. Ok, penso di poter restare ancora un mistero, anche dopo questa risposta, haha.

LLRNR: Tu e Marcus siete una coppia affiatata anche nella vita quotidiana. Quali sono i pro e i contro di essere una coppia sia nella vita privata che in una band?

JENNIE-ANN: I pro sono: siamo musicisti e lavorare con Marcus mi permette di collaborare con uno degli artisti piùgrandi per me. Sono molto fortunata per questo. Lui è anche il produttore dell’album e mi lascia una grande libertà  di espressione, e questo è un altro grande vantaggio. Con chi vorresti lavorare se non con chi ti dà  questa sensazione di tranquillità  e sicurezza? Inoltre, è un tipo divertente e con un gran senso dell’umorismo e non riesco a pensare che a cose positive quando si tratta di lavorare con lui. Ci siamo conosciuti anni fa grazie al nostro comune lavoro di musicisti, quindi è stato molto naturale che la nostra conoscenza venisse poi a confluire in seno agli Avatarium.

LLRNR: Potresti presentare ai nostri lettori gli altri membri della band e dirci qualcosa su di loro?

JENNIE-ANN: Abbiamo Lars Sköld alla batteria: è un batterista molto esperto che ha lavorato per molti anni con i Tiamat, coi quali ha inciso parecchi dischi e intrapreso tour. È conosciuto come il piùrumoroso batterista in Svezia e credo che ciò corrisponda a verità ; ma ha anche un’autentica passione per la musica, suona anche la fisarmonica e la chitarra ed è un musicista “totale”. Poi abbiamo Mats Rydström, il nostro John Paul Jones svedese, un bassista incredibilmente groovy, con una lunga formazione musicale alle spalle: ha frequentato il Conservatorio qui a Stoccolma ed è anche un corista affermato. Suona anche in una band chiamata Abramis Brama, che canta in svedese. Infine abbiamo Rickard Nilsson all’organo: lui è uno dei piùgrandi pianisti di Svezia. È un freelancer e ha lavorato con molti grandi artisti; e quello che sentite sul disco è un vero e proprio “show of hands”.

LLRNR: Saresti d’accordo se definissimo il sound degli Avatarium come “Bellezza nell’oscurità : atmosfere doom influenzate dal blues e ricche di emozioni spirituali e malinconia mistica”?

JENNIE-ANN: SàŒ!!!

LLRNR: Vuoi parlarci dei tuoi artisti preferiti? Con quali gruppi o artisti sei cresciuta e quali pensi ti abbiano influenzato a inizio carriera?

JENNIE-ANN: Ce ne sono tantissimi, potrei scrivere un libro! Ho sempre avuto molte influenze e sono sempre stata ispirata dagli artisti piùdisparati: Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Aretha Franklin, i Beatles, Nina Simone…

LLRNR: Ci sono alcune nuove band che ti piacerebbe raccomandarci?

JENNIE-ANN: …No. Hahaha, mi dispiace. No, fammi pensare, questa domanda è davvero difficile per me. Penso che passerò oltre!

LLRNR: La prima volta che personalmente ho visto gli Avatarium dal vivo è stato alcuni anni fa allo Sweden Rock Festival e ho ottimi ricordi di quel concerto: ricordo che suonaste di fronte al sole che stava lentamente tramontando”…. Qual è stato il concerto preferito della vostra carriera? E quale invece il piùdeludente, se ce n’è stato uno?

JENNIE-ANN: Ogni concerto che abbiamo fatto è sempre stato molto emozionante per me, quindi non posso sceglierne uno solo. Non importa se si tratti di un grande festival o di un piccolo nightclub. Si tratta di mettersi nella condizione e nello stato ideale per poter connettersi con ciò che conta davvero, e cioè entrare in contatto con la musica e l’energia, con la speranza di riuscire a trasmettere il tutto alla gente. Il piùdelle volte credo di esserci riuscita. Lo vedo come un obbligo nei confronti del nostro pubblico, non importa se davanti al palco ci sono 10 o 500 persone.

LLRNR: Promuoverete il nuovo album con un tour? Avremo finalmente la possibilità  di vedere gli Avatarium in Italia?

JENNIE-ANN: Sì!!! Partiremo per un tour europeo da headliners il prossimo settembre e ci fermeremo in Italia per uno show a Milano! Non vediamo l’ora di suonare davanti al nostro pubblico italiano, quindi porta tutti i tuoi amici e vieni a salutarci 🙂

LLRNR: Grazie mille Jennie-Ann per il tempo dedicato a LLRNR! Hai un particolare messaggio da inviare ai nostri lettori?

JENNIE-ANN: Ringrazio io te per l’intervista e spero di vederti a Milano! LLRNR: Hello Jennie-Ann and welcome to LongLiveRockNRoll. First of all, let’s talk about your new album “Hurricanes and Halos”: what’s hiding behind the title? What does the hurricanes and halos represent in your vision?

JENNIE-ANN: Even though we are not a political band, the title reflects on the current state of the world. In times like these we are constantly reminded how power enables people to do evil in the name of a good cause. Whether there are religious, political or cultural overtones, their goal is always to manipulate and create fear in our hearts. We seem to get used to right-winged politicians taking over, but this is a horrible thought and under no circumstances should we ever accept that this becomes “normal”.

LLRNR: There’s an old cliché in music that the last album is always the best one. “The Girl With The Raven Mask” was highly praised all around the world and also LLRNR celebrated it as one of the best releases of 2015. So, it has been a great challenge for sure to give that album the right following: what do we listeners and fans have to wait for from “Hurricanes and Halos”? Does it sound like the previous album or there is something new and peculiar in it?

JENNIE-ANN: I can only speak for myself, but for a person like me it would be impossible to make the same record over and over again and it’s the same for the guys in the band. Our aim is to make music that we like ourselves and these steps have been completely natural. When we discussed about making the album, we wanted an album that completed our live set. Some more up tempo songs that are more straight forward… it all felt completely natural for us to walk this path. 

LLRNR: I’m really in love with the lyrics of your songs: every track seems to tell us a story and we can imagine the characters of these stories developing in front of us, just like in a movie. Could you tell us something about the lyrics of these new album? Did you try to catch up again with themes related to the supernatural or did you try to explore something more related to the “real” life?

JENNIE-ANN: The greatest gift a songwriter can get is if a person starts to reflect upon his own relationship to the lyrics. By that I mean thinking about his own history and about which emotion these lyrics trigger in him. I saw this great interview with Joni Mitchell (one of my idols) and she said: Once I start telling people what a song is about, they will only see me in the lyrics and not themselves anymore. So if I should say something about Avatarium’s lyrics ”“ they are cleverly written and there are many layers. So it’s really up to the listener to interpret and to feel how they connect to it. 

LLRNR: Are there some songs in these new album that you love in a particular way or that have something special that you’d like to talk about? I’m very curious, for example, about the construction of the song “Medusa Child” ”…

JENNIE-ANN: I love them all actually, so it would be impossible to just pick one song, we had a great flow throughout the album. As for “Medusa Child”… I was a little anxious when I heard the first parts of the song (Leif has written it), it was a totally different key and so we had to think hard and work on the arrangement. I thought a lot about my interpretation of the lyrics and the technical part of the vocals. So it took us quite a while to get the pieces together and it ends in a longer instrumental part, that was difficult too. But it’s a unique track and I think it turned out really cool. 

LLRNR: And what about “Road To Jerusalem”? Is the song linked to the biblical theme or what else?

JENNIE-ANN: I will be as non-manifest as on the previous question… You can think about it in a metaphorical way. It can be a place where you reach fulfilment, it can be also religious or political. I know what it means for me, but there are many layers. 

LLRNR: “When Breath Turns To Air” seems to deal with spiritual life after death”… 

JENNIE-ANN: The song was recorded after the death of Marcus Jidell‘s father and had a very personal touch for all of us. But I carry different aspects of experience, I work in cancer care and this has also brought in a new element for me. It’s a bit of a comforting thought… that ‘when breath turns into air, I will be everywhere’. 

LLRNR: What is the current role of Leif Edling in the band? We know that he took part in the songwriting process but that he’s no longer in the line up of Avatarium, even because he started a new project called The Doomsday Kingdom. Do you think he will continue to give his contribute to Avatarium in the future or it’s a closed chapter?

JENNIE-ANN: Leif has never toured with us, so there are no dramatical changes on this album. On the previous album, he didn’t play bass on every song neither. But the situation is very fortunate for us, Leif is one of the greatest songwriters around and Avatarium is a band of great craftmanship, so all I can say is that I am extremely honoured to work with him and be in that musical situation.

LLRNR: We know many things about the career of Marcus Jidell, but your musical career before Avatarium is still a mystery to us. Could you tell us something about her? Where did this pure vocal diamond hide?

JENNIE-ANN: Haha, I love to be and stay a mystery 😉 I started singing at an early age and realized that music was my passion, but I never considered it a career choice. I toured with different artists here in Sweden, but when it comes to hard rock, this is my debut. But good quality music is good quality music to me, no matter which genre it is. Okay, I think I might stay a mystery, even after this answer, haha.

LLRNR: Marcus and Jennie-Ann are a tight couple also in everyday’s life; which are the pros and cons to be a couple in the private life and also in a band?

JENNIE-ANN: The pros are: We are musicians and working with Marcus enables me to work with one of the greatest artists. That is very fortunate for me. He is also the producer of the album and he gives me great freedom of expression which is a huge pro. And who else would you want to work with that you feel save and secure with? Also, he is very humouristic and funny and I can only think of pros when it comes to working with him. We met as musicians and through work, so it was very easy to make that transition and work in Avatarium. 

LLRNR: Could you introduce to our readers the other members of the band and tell us something about them?  

JENNIE-ANN: We have Lars Sköld on drums, he is a very experiences drummer who worked with Tiamat for many years and toured and recorded very much. He is known as the loudest drummer in Sweden and I think he is. But his also has this genuine passion for music and he also plays the accordian or the guitar and is an overall musician. Then we have Mats Rydström, who is our Swedish John Paul Jones, an amazingly groovy bass player. He has a long musical training, went to music school here in Stockholm and is also a trained choir singer. He plays also in a band called Abramis Brama, a band with Swedish lyrics. Then we have Rickard Nilsson on organ and he is one of Sweden’s greatest pianist. He is a freelancer and worked with many big artists; and what you hear on the record is really a show of hands. 

LLRNR: Do you agree if Avatarium sound would be described as “Beauty in Darkness: bluesy influenced doom atmospheres with ghostly vibes and melancholic mysticism”?

JENNIE-ANN: YES!! 

LLRNR: Tell us something about your favorite artist/bands? Which band/artists you grew up with and influenced you in the beginning?

JENNIE-ANN: There are so many… I could write a book! I have many influences and have always been inspired by different artists. Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Aretha Franklin, The Beatles, Nina Simone…

LLRNR: Are there some new bands you’d like to recommend to us?

JENNIE-ANN: …no. Hahaha, I’m sorry. No, let me think, this is a bit harder for me though. I think I’ll pass on this question!

LLRNR: The first time I personally saw Avatarium live was some years ago at the Sweden Rock Festival and I was really blown away by that gig when you played while the sun was slowly setting”… What was the favorite gig of your career? And what was the most disappointing one, if there was one?

JENNIE-ANN: Every gig that we played has been very emotional for me, so I couldn’t pick just one single show. It doesn’t matter if it’s a huge festival or a little nightclub. It’s about putting yourself in that special and unique condition and state and most of the time I manage to get in touch with what’s important. To feel the music and energy and hopefully to communicate this. I see it as my obligation to deliver it to the audience, no matter if it’s 10 or 500 people in front of the stage. 

LLRNR: Will you promote the new album with an extensive tour? Will there be finally a chance to see Avatarium in Italy?  

JENNIE-ANN: Yes!! We will play a European headline tour in September and also stop in Italy for a show in Milan! We can’t wait for play for our Italian audience, so bring all your friends and say hi 🙂
