Jennifer: Grazie a voi! Sto molto bene ti ringrazio!

Avete suonato “Night Will Fade” con Ben Metzner (Feuerschwanz/dArtagnan), “Fairytale of Doom” con Micha Rhein (In Extremo) e “In The Shadows” con Fabienne Erni (Eluveitie/Illumishade).

Jennifer: In realtà  no, era una telecamera normalissima.

Puoi darmi qualsiasi strumento e vorrò sempre provarlo!

Eravate davvero in piena confidenza!

Jennifer: Ad oggi, ti direi Origins!

ENGLISH VERSION

We had the huge pleasure to have a talk with Jennifer Haben, singer and composer from Beyond The Black. The German metal band has recently presented their project Origins, an online acoustic concert made with an extraordinary production where the band performed their songs with new acoustic arrangements that were absolutely sensational. Jennifer has shared with us the story of this project and the behind the scenes that brought to the creation of one of the most emotional show in the career of Beyond The Black.

Hi Jennifer! It is a huge pleasure and a true honour to have you with us today! Thank you so much for your availability! First of all, how are you and how is all the band doing right now?

Jennifer: Thank you for having me! I am really good, thanks a lot! In this situation of course you can’t say that everything is amazing, but we are all fine and very happy that we can do stuff like we did with Origins. We are happy that we had the possibility to do something like this and do music together. We are hoping that everything will be back to normal very soon so that we can do everything as we did before the pandemic!

Definitely! We are all keeping fingers crossed for the best and for the return of live music as soon as possible!

I really want to concentrate this interview around your recent online acoustic experience Origins that you just mentioned. You did this amazing project that you released on the 16th of April and that was originally supposed to last two days, but then you extended until the 23rd because of the huge success that it made. You did a fantastic show with some extremely beautiful acoustic rearrangements of your songs that were performed in an online experience that really showed all the limitless potential of acoustic music! You also had some very cool collaborations with several featured guests during the show and the overall production was incredible! It was something completely new and out of common! We have seen many live streams shows in this period, but you guys really did something very original that really brought acoustic shows to another level. How did you guys come up with the idea of doing this type of concert?

Jennifer: Thank you so much! We always liked to do acoustic music with just guitar and vocals! It always worked very well with most of the songs that we did so we always loved to play acoustic music! Since I had a cello at home, I learned to play it and I always said to myself that one day I will play an acoustic tour or something similar. In the end, I did not play a real tour because I am not good enough (laughs), but the idea was there! We also had the Acoustic Clash Session with Wacken Open Air so we really did a lot of stuff with acoustic music and the idea of doing something like Origins was really becoming stronger and stronger”… so we just said ok, let’s try something different! Something super special for the people and for us in this special time! We had the time to do something like this in this period and we focused on this project for half a year by being fully concentrated on that show”… and we usually never have so much time! We obviously could not play live shows in between so we had a lot of time to practice all the new arrangements. It was something really difficult for all of us because all the arrangements are super different! I can tell you that it will also be difficult for us to come back to the old versions and play live shows again! (laughs) We will definitely have to do other rehearsals for that as well then! It was much fun for us to do Origins and we are really happy that we did this!

I really think that it was a great idea because it was something really unique! You really managed to create a superb show that was built around an extremely interesting format that none has done before! I really want to congratulate the whole band and everyone that has been involved in this project as it was literally phenomenal! You had many different stage sets, a multi camera coverage as well as massive LED screens”… How do you put on such a huge show? I guess there must have been a lot of people involved in it and I can imagine that in this period of pandemic it must have been not so easy to organize it right?

Jennifer: First of all, thank you so much for your kind words! It was definitely not so easy to organize such a big show with the current pandemic situation. We had a musical director that was also playing at Wacken with us in 2016. We love him, his name is Arne Wiegand and he was also playing the piano on the show! He is a master! In playing a piano and in everything he does! We loved working with him on that project and thanks to its help we could organize every single detail. We started arranging the songs half a year before the show and then we really had a lot of rehearsals starting from December of last year. Most of the time was taken by arranging the songs as it was really the biggest thing that had to be done for this show. Then came everything else. We had a huge hygiene protocol that we had to follow, and it could have been a huge problem for this project if something would have not turned well”… We had a weekend of final rehearsals and recording, I was so nervous because if one of us would have been positive to COVID-19, all of what we had prepared for would have not been possible”… Everything and all of the money that we had to spend for it would have been wasted”… so, until the last moment when the last one was tested, I was really worried about it”… and then only once all the tests were completed we could all breathe a sigh of relief! We were so glad that everyone was negative! I can definitely understand that because of that risk other band are not doing this kind of shows in this period! You really have the work of half a year that depends on that moment where everyone needs to be negative… it was not the easiest show to prepare to be honest! This was our first online show, there were seven people holding cameras and a really huge crew. We really wanted something big around it because all these songs arranged into acoustic were really something very big for us! It was not just guitar and vocals, there was really a huge amount of work into all the musical work, so we really wanted everything around it to be huge as well!

I think all the effort really paid in the end! I can definitely imagine all the stress of having this risk of not being able to play a show that you so much worked for”… it really must have been very hard to deal with this fear of losing the chance to play this show until the very last minute”…

Jennifer: And also, financially speaking it would have been hard as well”… in this pandemic, you really cannot do many things that are really good for your money unfortunately”… when you do drive-in shows or the sort of limited capacity shows that have been allowed in this period, it’s always less people than what you usually have with normal shows, so you really have problems of financing all of that stuff… All the crew, all the equipment”… there is really many things that you have to consider when you put on a show”… and with these limited capacity shows, it is not that sure that you will be able to earn the amount of money that you usually earn with normal shows”… So yes, it would have been really hard for us if Origins would have not been possible”…

I can imagine! I am really glad that everything went well in the end!

Talking about the arrangements of the songs, I really wanted to ask you if you can guide us through this process of rearranging metal songs into acoustic. I think you guys really did a stellar job by not simply playing your songs with acoustic instruments but really making them sound like new songs with super fresh rearrangements that were literally outstanding! How did you work around this process of rearranging the songs?

Jennifer: This is not an easy question! You have to analyse the songs in order try to figure out what is the main thing that you want to grab. We always try to put the main vocals or the main melody into the piano and the guitars more like the second and third harmonies. This was mainly how we constructed the songs. The other musical elements were then put around these three things.

Talking about this, there is one specific song that I really loved under this acoustic arrangement which is “Paralyzed”. I think it is also the one that you changed the most compared to its original version and I was very enthusiastic on how it turned out to be in this completely new acoustic form! How much did you have to work on this particular track to achieve the acoustic arrangement that you had in Origins?

Jennifer: Thank you! We wanted to have something that the people would not recognize very soon by playing a version that would be very different. In fact, we wanted to pick a song that was not one of the singles to make it even more difficult! (laughs) We had to spend a lot of time thinking on how we would have rearranged the song, but once we got that it was then pretty easy! We had the verses, the chorus, and the structure that we wanted to have so it was really easy to put it together. We then created the break, the transition to the harder version of “Paralyzed” and the rest did Arne with the piano solo! (laughs) Every time we were rehearsing and that he was doing this solo I was like: “Oh my God, with who am I playing music right now?! He is amazing!”

Yes! That solo he did at the end of “Paralyzed” was phenomenal! It was unbelievable, even from a physical point of view it was incredible how fast his fingers were going! Truly amazing!

You had some very cool collaborations with some featured guests during Origins. You played “Night Will Fade” with Ben Metzner from Feuerschwanz and dArtagnan, “Fairytale of Doom” with Micha Rhein from In Extremo and “In The Shadows” with Fabienne Erni from Eluveitie and Illumishade. Your duet with Fabienne was particularly unique as since she could not be there in person you found an amazing way to perform with her thanks to some kind of hologram technology! It was unbelievable how real the hologram looked! And the performance of both of you together was sensational! How did you have to practice in order to make this technology work? How did you have to work on the synchronization with Fabienne’s virtual performance?

Jennifer: It was a lot of preparation! We did not know until the final rehearsal if it would have worked! We had a sort of semi-transparent curtain where we could project the video and to make it work it also had to be very dark around it. We were really nervous about it because we did not know until the very end if it would have worked! But then it turned out to be really cool! The most difficult thing for me was the talk after the song as it wasn’t live. I had to write a script for it so that Fabienne could record that at home and that I could then practice answering to that. That was a fun thing! It involved a lot of preparation that we usually don’t have on a tour or other live shows. It sounds pretty easy in the end but it’s something that you have to think about in order to make it work! I am glad that it turned out great! But we really didn’t know if it would have worked before we did the recording!

It turned out to be very realistic! It really seemed like she was there! I think it was really great! Did Fabienne have to use a special camera to record her part?

Jennifer: No, it’s just a normal camera. But you really need good lights and a black background. She has a lot of equipment at home that was really good and it was great to work with her! I don’t know if everyone could have done that! She is a lovely person and I will definitely do something again with her!

How emotional it was to sing “Breeze” with the Metal Kids Choir? This was your last track of the show and I think it was a fantastic way to end the concert.

Jennifer: Thank you! I have to say this was one of my personal highlights! I love to sing with kids and I love when the kids are singing! I love Disney songs as well and when kids are singing them, I think it’s super cute! I had this idea of doing it and I was glad that we could do that! I was really happy that a lot of kids did it as it was also a work for them! They really had to learn the song, stand there, and record the video thanks to the help of their mum & dad. They really had to take a lot of their time to do it so I was really honoured to sing with them! I was of course super emotional on that song and I really loved it! It is something that I really wanted! There was a lot of people that were not so sure about this choice and I was glad that I managed to do it! I knew that it would have been really good and that a lot of people would have been emotional after that as well!

I really think it was a great choice! It’s true that usually bands end their sets with very energetic songs but I think with the acoustic configuration this was just the perfect ending! I am definitely glad you went for this choice!

I think I have now the most important question of the interview”… is there going to be a DVD/Blu-Ray of Origins as well as an album with all these amazing songs?

Jennifer: This is not an easy question to be honest”… because it’s not easy for us to just release it. It’s more a thing that we can’t fully control. You know what I mean”… but we are on something and we want to do something”… we are just not sure that it will be possible”… but we will try!

I totally understand that it depends on many factors absolutely! I would love that and I am sure that a lot of people would love it as well, as I have seen among on all the amazing comments that you received for your performance. I just really hope that there is going the possibility to have the chance to experience Origins again!

Jennifer: We really hope so too!

You guys have been one of the most active bands during this period of pandemic, playing Drive-In shows, Wacken World Wide, making the amazing covers for the “Wacken Open Air Acoustic Clash ”“ The Lockdown Session”, now Origins and this summer you will also play three Open Air Shows in Koln, Hamburg, and Nuremberg, all in line with the current health & safety regulations. Tell us your experience on how important it was to find all these possible ways to try to keep music alive and keep contact with the fans during this period of pandemic. It surely must have been a lot of work and not easy at all but how important it was to hold all these projects in this difficult period?

Jennifer: We are not the kind of band who just wants to lean back and do nothing. We want to do music together so that it is keeping us alive! If I would not have done anything I don’t know how I would feel right now”… I am happy that I had something like Origins that was really amazing to play and I was really happy to see that people really enjoyed it as well as that it was something positive for them in their lives right now. Our album Horizons came out just when the pandemic started and I told the guys: “There are some positive messages in this album that people need right now. Let’s just do what we can!”. Even if we have not been able to go on tour with it yet, which was something very difficult for us, we did all we could and many of the things we did really turned out to be the most emotional thing for us! I think that for the people it was great to do it!

I definitely think that everything you did was fantastic! I don’t know what you could have done more in this period”…

Jennifer: I don’t know either! It was always super difficult to find something new to do in this pandemic. You always have to do a step in a direction that you wouldn’t have done without the pandemic. It’s not easy”… we had to learn progressively all the stuff that we did during the pandemic, like for the drive-in shows, we didn’t have anyone that could say how many people would come to our shows because of course no one knew in this situation what would have happen, as we were all experiencing this for the first time. It wasn’t easy and I can understand that a lot of other bands are not doing these kinds of projects in this situation. You have to be risky and you really have to say “Ok, I am investing very much in it because I love what I do and I love giving the people right now what they need”. I am really hoping that everything will be normal very soon so that things will be easier for everyone again.

Definitely! I am very thankful that you guys did all these projects in this period as it really kept the connection with the fans and it really helped keeping the whole music scene alive in this difficult period. I seriously think you have done an amazing job by doing so much during this hard period!

Jennifer: Thank you so much, really!

You released your 4th studio album “Horizons” not even a year ago as it came out in June 2020 and it’s therefore still very recent, but is there already maybe some thinking about working on a new album with some first ideas?

Jennifer: Yes! Of course! To be honest, we obviously had a lot to do with Origins recently and I needed a couple of weeks to calm down again after the show, but now I am fully into thinking about the next album! We just started with some ideas to really get the concept for the next album and this is really the most important thing right now for me!

Wow! You guys really never stop! I am really glad to hear that you already started to work on it!

I know that on top of singing you have many other passions as you play the piano, the flute, the cello, the tubular bells”… how did you get this passion of playing so many instruments?

Jennifer: I don’t know! (laughs) I just know that I am always interested in every single instrument! You can give me anything and I would want to try it out! I am not the kind of human that really wants to practice so many hours to really play it the best I can, I just want to play it as much as I can sing to it. But I have to say, with Origins, I saw Arne playing and then I said: “Ok, you have to give me piano lessons because I want to play like you too!” (laughs) So now, on top of writing an album, I have also the will to play all this fast stuff as well! I don’t know how I will manage to play like him, but I really want to have lessons from Arne! I just have 24 hours a day as everyone else so I cannot play every single instrument every day and I have to concentrate on something, but I am always interested in new stuff! I can imagine one day having every single instrument in my room and go to it if I have an idea for a song and that I know that it would sound great! (laughs)

That’s an awesome idea! One thing that I was really impressed is when you sang the cover of “Warrior’s Call” from Volbeat and played the cello at the same time for the W.O.A. Acoustic Clash! This is really something that we don’t see that often! How did you manage to sing and play cello at the same time for this song? That was absolutely phenomenal!

Jennifer: Thank you! I didn’t know if I would really get it till the recording day to really play it! It was really difficult to be honest! Because I had only two weeks or something to prepare”… I didn’t play something super difficult of course, just something super easy, but I really wanted to play it! So, we tried it and since we had the possibility to record it again, it was a safe space for me! It was risky to be honest and not easy to record it, but in the end, it sounded ok for me so I am really happy that I did it!

It definitely is an outstanding performance! I really have to say that all the 4 covers you did for the W.O.A. Acoustic Clash are absolutely incredible and this was one with you playing the cello and singing at the same time is particularly amazing!

Which ones have been the bands or the singers that have influenced you the most in your singing career?

Jennifer: I have to say that I have always been a huge fan of Paramore! I love Hayley Williams, I love her power and her punk attitude. I really love that! Also, when I was younger, I loved Whitney Houston as she really represents powerful female voices. She was definitely my main influence when I was young! I have to say that when I got older, I got more and more into Freddie Mercury! Freddie is for me what is the most important thing in singing, which is not just get the perfect notes, but really to get your heart onto the table to the people and to really express yourself as if you would talk! That is something that I still have to learn a lot! When I was younger, I was really more into that singing perfectly, also singing with my heart of course but now that I get older, I really want the people to feel what are your feelings when you sing! That is what I am still practicing and that is really the most important thing for me right now. And that’s why I love Freddie Mercury’s voice so much!

I totally understand! You can definitely see when an artist sings or play with passion and this is what I see when I listen to Beyond The Black! You see the passion of every single member and it gives much more to the songs! I love that!

There’s obviously so much more to look forward to for Beyond The Black. You are a relatively recent band but you guys have already achieved such an amazing maturity that is truly remarkable! I think that one of your performances that really shows this maturity is the way you guys played the mainstage in Wacken in 2019! You really played with so much energy and confidence that it was truly unbelievable! How was it to be on the mainstage of one of the most important metal festivals in the world?

Jennifer: Oh my God, I can’t explain! Because you don’t think about it when you are standing there! You cannot! You are in front of so many people and so many minds that are thinking about what you are doing on the stage! I can’t really say how it feels because you just realise after it! We saw the stream after the show and then that was the moment when we realised how many people were there! That was when the boys and I really stood amazed in front of what we just did! When you are standing on stage you really don’t realize that! Because you really have to be concentrated on your performance! That is also why I love to watch again our performances! This show was definitely one of the most important things that I did in my music career!

And it really looked like it was the fifth or sixth time that you were playing the mainstage in Wacken! You looked so confident! It was really impressive to see how you guys were handling your set at the mainstage as a first time there! It was fantastic!

If I would ask you which one is the nicest memory with Beyond The Black right now, which one would it be?

Jennifer: Right now, I would say Origins! Because it was so special! And it is so emotional for us still! Of course, all the Wacken shows were super special for us as well because we always could see how many people did realise that Beyond The Black is here and that Beyond The Black is cool! (laughs) Since 2014, when we played our first show there, we played in a tent and we didn’t have an album out yet back then, nobody knew what we did and what our music was, but there were some people and the tent was getting crowded and crowded during the show until the tent was full and nobody could get in anymore! The year after that, we went to the Party Stage and there were always more and more people that were coming and that were interested in Beyond The Black! That is something that is super special for us and super important! Wacken really feels like a second home for us! But Origins was the first thing that we did just ourselves in such a difficult time by putting six months of just working on that and it was really special for us! That is really my favourite moment with the band so far!

And I think we all saw why it was so special! You guys put so much passion into it and it really felt like something you guys believed in from the start! Fantastic!

Jennifer, you have been super nice and it has been a huge pleasure talking to you, thank you so much for your huge kindness and availability! We wish you and Beyond The Black all the very best and we can’t wait to see you playing live in Italy again! We are super enthusiastic that you have a show scheduled in Milan at the Live Club on the 26th of January 2022 with Amaranthe and we can’t wait to see you there! Do you want to say something to your Italian fans to conclude this interview?

Jennifer: Yes! Stay strong! We will have live shows again and then we will party very hard! We hope that everything will be normal very soon and we can’t wait to play for you guys in Italy! Everyone will be healthy then and everything will work out!
