Il The River Tour di Bruce Springsteen con la E Street Band, che promuove The Ties That Bind: The River Collection, cofanetto uscito il 4 dicembre 2015, è iniziato questa notte a Pittsburgh. Nelle 3 ore e mezza di concerto, una delle 34 canzoni in scaletta è Rebel Rebel di David Bowie, suonata da Springsteen e dalla sua Band per ricordare il grande amico e fan scomparso pochi giorni fa dopo 18 mesi di battaglia contro il cancro. Il brano è stato introdotto da qualche ricordo dell’artista:
“I want to take a moment and just note the passing of my good friend David Bowie. David not that many people know, but he supported our music way, way, way back at the very, very beginning 1973, he rang me up and I visited him down in Philly when he was making the Young Americans record. He covered some of my music, “Hard To Be A Saint In The City” and “Growin’ up” and he was a big supporters of ours. I took the Greyhound bus down to Philadelphia, that’s how early it was. Anyway, we’re thinking of him”.
Il concerto è iniziato con Meet me in the city, un outtake incluso nella raccolta The Ties That Bind: The River Collection, ed è continuato con The River full album e con altre tredici canzoni tratte da diversi album della sua discografia, tra i quali Darkness on the edge of town, Born to run, The rising e Tunnel of love e le cover di Because the night (scritta da Springsteen per Patti Smith), Rebel Rebel (David Bowie) e Shout (The Isley Brothers).
