Ciao Fabi! Innanzitutto, come stai?

Fabienne: Grazie mille a voi per avermi invitata! È un vero piacere! Sto bene grazie!

Sto molto bene anch’io ti ringrazio!

Fabienne: Si! È tutto grazie a Mirjam!

Wow! State già  pensando al secondo album quindi?

Fabienne: Si!

(risate).

Fabienne: Certo!

English Version

We had the huge pleasure and honour to have with us the amazing Fabienne Erni, singer & harpist of Eluveitie as well as singer & pianist of her new band Illumishade, which we had the chance to go behind the scenes with her and discover all the curiosities around this new project.

Hi Fabi! Thank you so much for your availability, we are really delighted to have you here for this interview! How are you doing?

Fabienne: First of all, thank you so much for having me! It’s a pleasure! I am doing good! The weather is good at the moment so I am pretty happy! I am still very busy with the Illumishade stuff but I am allright! How are you and how is the situation in Italy?

I am doing great too thanks a lot! Here in Italy the weather is not so good today, it is actually raining”… it has been days and days of raining recently so let’s hope for better weather soon! The situation here in Italy is getting better thankfully, these have been difficult months as for everyone but we see a little bit the light at the end of the tunnel! Restrictions are lowering progressively, we still have to wear masks and follow the social distancing rules but everything is almost open now except the fact that you cannot have gatherings or big events happening”… but it’s overall getting better. How is the situation in Switzerland?

Fabienne: It is actually getting back to normal more or less, stuff is open but with restrictions. Slowly, slowly it is coming back to normal”…

It is surely still going to take some time to fully come back to normal but fingers crossed for the best for everyone!

So, first of all, many congratulations on starting your new band Illumishade and for releasing your amazing debut album “ECLYPTIC: Wake of Shadows” that came out on the 15th of May! You played a live streaming release show one week after the album came out where you performed your entire album with a fantastic performance, giving the same energy as if there would have been the crowd in front you and by broadcasting the show with a super cool multi-camera platform. It really felt like watching a live DVD! Can you tell us about the emotions you experience by playing your songs live for the first time and how it was to play a gig in such a particular configuration, with no crowd in the venue but knowing that people would have watched you on the screen?

Fabienne: Thank you so much for watching it! It’s so cool that you followed it! It was a very special experience because there were no people, but I knew that people were actually watching it! What was missing was the eye contact and of course the energy from the people”… we luckily had a very nice crew that was really pumped into the gig, like the sound & light engineers! That was actually very nice! Otherwise it would have really been like: “The song is over”… and now?”. We were really excited on how it would have felt playing the whole album in its entirety, it was very challenging to do it, but we had a lot of fun! The preparation was very stressful because there was so much stuff to resolve in the beginning”… there is always a great wait when you have a new production, especially when it is the first one you do! It was really exciting though and we had a lot of fun!

That is awesome! Especially because you also had to deal with so much stuff that usually doesn’t happen in real gigs, like you didn’t have people clapping in between the songs”… I guess that was another thing that you guys had to take care of. I think you guys did an amazing show by playing the whole album and by managing to re-create this magical atmosphere that we can experience by listening to the album! It was really great!

Fabienne: Yeah exactly, we thought of the fact that noone would have clapped in between the songs and that we needed to have a good transition between them”… it was a special situation. I hope that it was once in a lifetime release show though because I would love to have a normal release show for the next album of course!

Definitely! We all hope that it was once in a lifetime and that we are not going to experience this overall bad situation anymore. You guys managed this situation in a perfect way but obviously we all hope that the next album release is going to be a real gig, with a lot of people in a cool venue with all the energy from the crowd and everyone!

I know that Illumishade was born from what was your Master thesis. Did you have already in your mind back at that time, while you were working on it, to transform your project into a real band or is it an idea that came only after you finished your Master?

Fabienne: It has always been one of my wishes and dreams to actually start a project from scratch and see where it will go. When I did the thesis for the Master, I didn’t really think about it that much but somehow it just developed like that. Everyone in the band got hooked and we all just enjoyed playing together, playing this kind of music and having this world around the music. This is also thanks to Tamara Schön, who is taking over from the outside, managing the project and helping us with all the stuff around Illumishade. Because there are so many new challenges that you have to face when you are starting a project from scratch! It was very exciting and she has been very helpful for the band! Together we form a really great team, we have a lot of fun and we enjoy a lot what we do! The whole journey has been pretty crazy because it went really fast and it was really intense! The way we went to the studio was also very spontaneous. I was together with Jonas Wolf working on the songs, and I just talked about the possibility to go to the studio and we spontaneously thought about asking Tommy Vetterli if he was free in autumn, but we weren’t thinking about it initially! This is how the project developed then! Everyone in the band really wanted to be part of it and it was really nice!

It is such a nice story to tell that it started from your Master thesis project and that it became a real band! How did you come up with the name “Illumishade”?

Fabienne: It was because I knew that the story was going to be about the contrast between light and darkness. Not only the story but the music as well. I really love to sing these cheesy ballads but I also really enjoy to sing metal or harder songs! I really wanted my project to have both of them, merge them together and build one whole project. Jonas shared the same idea too. He is an incredible guitarist who likes to play heavy stuff but he also has this softer side. Everybody has both sides in the band and I really wanted to have this contrast in the band name too. I then chose this name for the Master thesis and we kept it! Also because I really had this idea of creating a world of ice landscapes to combine it to the stories, and I found a Finnish world “Lumisade”, among the huge number of words that they have in Finnish about snow. And then I thought: “Lumisade”… Illumishade!!!”

This is so cool! It perfectly fits the story of the album like you said, I love it! Can you tell us the emotions you experienced when you released your very first Illumishade song ever “World’s End” in January?

Fabienne: That was actually really crazy because I had no idea on what to expect and how people would react! We did a crowdfunding so people were prepared that something was coming and they pledged for something”… but they didn’t really know exactly what it would have been! And I was like: “What if they regret it?”. These are the thoughts you have when you do something like that and when you don’t know what it is going to be. Since Illumishade is quite different from Eluveitie I was scared that people would not have like it maybe”… I didn’t know what to expect and in the end I was really happy with it! I remember that the same day that “World’s End” came out we were shooting “Rise” and I was very stressed because of all these things going on at the same time”… and the feedback was so good! I really love the way everything started with Illumishade! It really feels like having already a community and a real family! People have been very supportive, showing us a lot of love and being very warm! It’s amazing!

And you totally deserve all this love! You created what I think is a masterpiece, so I think this is all your merit! Like you said, you released ECLYPTIC: Wake of Shadows following a crowdfunding campaign that started at the end of November. Can you tell us about your experience on releasing an album DIY and about the advantages of taking this path instead of going through a label?

Fabienne: I think it was possible to do it the way we did it because we have Tamara in our team. Without Tamara, I wouldn’t have known how the whole band & album release management would have worked. She is a person from outside the band but she is in the team and this is really priceless to have! And thanks to that we have all the rights and all the decisions happening within Illumishade. And this is actually very nice! We love the way we built this group and that we do everything together by having the freedom to take all the decisions. It works very well like that and we are all very happy!

Let’s dive into the album. I think it has a perfect balance between heavy songs, ballads and instrumental tracks that allow an extremely pleasant transition from one song to another. There is a magical atmosphere created by the orchestration and it really makes your mind travel while you listen to the album. We can really appreciate a huge number of tracks within every song and the work that has been done to really experience every single instrument or melody during the songs is superb! Can you give us a little bit of background on how the whole Illumishade team worked in the studio to obtain this beautifully complex sound?

Fabienne: The orchestration and all these complex sounds are the creations of our keyboardist Mirjam Schnedl. She loves to say that the more tracks the better! Since I had to do the Master thesis, we played a show at school in September but since then the songs developed so much! They changed a lot, we changed the form, we changed the orchestration, we changed the whole mood and so on”… we went to the mountains for one week last summer all together working on the songs and it was really nice! I had together with Jonas some rough ideas and pre-productions”… and during this week every band member brought himself into it! That was very nice! We added the fingerprints of everybody in the songs. We really created this album as a band. During the studio then, a lot happened again, and this is what I love! Just trying out stuff right in the moment! And then sometimes something brilliant comes out! Sometimes not (laughs), but sometimes it does! It was a lot of fun and it was really intense because we started the studio recordings in between the Eluveitie tours. We were in the USA and then two weeks at home before heading to the seven weeks European tour. So, in between, we went to the studio for some time”… then I was sick so we had to postpone it a little bit, but we found the way to work it out!

In fact, from the day you announced for the first time your project in November and the day you released the album in May, it’s a very short amount of time! We can definitely tell that you guys have done a huge amount of work in a short amount of time! You managed to create all that in this very small amount of time you had and that’s amazing!

Fabienne: Yeah! It was very intense! I remember many nights in the tour bus after the show, calling with Tamara to discuss and prepare everything in the backlounge of the tour bus! It was totally worth it thought! You know, I didn’t want to wait so long to release the project… the idea of Illumishade is to concentrate on this project when there is a gap with Eluveitie. So, everything has been planned in between the Eluveitie gaps.

We can appreciate some very nice melodies created by bowed string instruments too such as violins & cellos in the songs, did you work with a real orchestra as well?

Fabienne: Yes! This is all thanks to Mirjam! She is studying composition. She is at this art school and there are many musicians there as well as a nice studio. And it just went very spontaneous that she could record with an orchestra! She did a night shift and she prepared all the sheets so that they could record. This is all thanks to Mirjam and I am so happy that we managed to have live strings on the album! It gives such a different feel to it! Mirjam is really amazing, I am so happy that she is with us!

Wow! This is like the cherry on the cake! I agree that it is a genuinely nice detail that adds a super cool touch on the album!

The magical atmosphere that we feel throughout the music can also be seen in the lyrics, because you managed to create this very nice world with all these mystical beings, ancient rituals and beautiful landscapes which I think is a super cool concept! There are these protectors of the world known as “The Illumi” whose purpose is to aid “The Guardian” in protecting the heart of the world and we find in the lyrics this very interesting contrast between light and obscurity taking over one after the other like in a real fight. What I think is really captivating is how this story is told in a beautiful poetic way, it’s really like reading a story from a book! Can you tell us what inspired you the most on creating this story and the whole magical word?

Fabienne: Thank you for all these kind words! When I knew that I had to start a project, I knew that it would have been based on a story. I am a huge fan of musical theatres and fantasy worlds and it really helps me to write not only music but also lyrics. When I have a story, I know exactly what I need to write about. And we developed it all together. I have been working on the lyrics with a friend from England too, Callum South, and I had all these song maps that we used to work together on the lyrics. It was a very cool ping-pong of ideas between us, like sometimes he wrote the chorus and I wrote the verse to the song and so on”… and it was very nice to work like that! It’s all about the story because it helps me so much to write something. When I have a story, everything is just clear!

One of the many amazing aspects of Illumishade is that you managed to create even an interactive world where the listener can be part of this magical world. There is in fact the possibility to be associated to one of the tribes represented by the members of the “Illumi” order by doing a “Tribe Quiz” on the Illumishade website and therefore be given some powers and characteristics that are specific to these tribes. Can you tell us how did you come up with the idea of creating such a cool concept?

Fabienne: The way we developed these tribes came from an original idea I had of creating three tribes that eventually became five. Tamara had the idea of doing the quiz and so on”… you know when you have these night shifts talks and you just fantasize on your ideas, with your mind going in many different directions”… it is like the idea we had of doing the collective intro for “Passage Through The Clouds”, where we collected the recordings of our fans”… the idea came up at like 2 in the morning at Jonas’s place! Even if it seemed like a crazy idea we just did it! And 2 days later we went online with it! And that was actually a lot of fun! These things only happen when you are together in the night and you are crazy enough to think like that! (laughs).

We can definitely see that there is a beautiful synergy among the members of the band and that you guys are really having fun all together on this project! It’s very nice to see how you guys get along!

Fabienne: Thank you! Yeah this group is definitely very nice! I have been studying with Yannick Urbanczik and Marc Friedrich, the bass player and the drummer, for 5 years so I know them really well, musically but also as persons. Jonas is like a brother for me as we also share the stage with Eluveitie and with Mirjam also we are super close friends! Tamara being also my best friend it really is a super a nice group!

There is one song in the album which I like to define as one of the most beautiful ballads in the recent rock/metal scene. Your vocal performance on this track is stunning! You reach some high notes that are absolutely incredible and the way this song has been constructed, with a crescendo of intensity over an extremely beautiful melody, allow this song to be a real gem. The song that I am talking about is obviously “Rise” and I just would like to ask you how this particular song was born.

Fabienne: Wow! Thank you so much! I am so happy to hear that! I was actually a bit worried on what people would have thought when we released this song because it is obviously not a heavy metal song”… I was a bit afraid but the reactions on this song were really positive and I was super happy about that! I had this chorus and this melody in my mind, I was sitting together with Jonas, he started programming some stuff and it all went actually pretty smooth on this song! We had other songs where we had to change the verses right before the studio because they were not good enough but this one was actually very organic how it grew! I remember I came with a bridge idea and Jonas suggested to change some of the chords and it worked pretty well! We changed a little bit the pre-chorus with the keys and it all went very smooth!

And the video that you have done for this song is also very beautiful! Where is the location of the actual lake you used as a background for this video?

Fabienne: This is the next lake next to Zurich lake, in the direction towards Italy. I spent a day with Jens de Vos from production, who did all our videos so far, and we were just driving around, we didn’t have the plan to shoot there initially! And we just passed it on the highway and we just went there, it was so spontaneous as well! The fact that we had live strings on the video was also very spontaneous”… we found a few people that had time and that wanted to be part of it and we were very lucky that they were available! I am very happy with the shots! Somehow our whole journey is very spontaneous!

That’s awesome! I want to talk a little bit about your voice now, because I think your voice on this album is simply phenomenal! We all knew already that you were an amazing singer from Eluveitie, but here in this project where you are the frontwoman, we can really appreciate the full spectrum of your voice! We definitely see how your voice can be at the same time extremely powerful and amazingly delicate, as you can sing in a fantastic way both the ballads and on the heavy songs! Can you tell us a little bit of your story as a singer, with which styles of music did you grow up with, what are your musical influences and which ones are your favourite singers?

Fabienne: Thank you so much! I listened a lot to musical theatres songs as well as Disney songs when I was a teenager! I then got into folk music when I was 18 and then when I spent one year in Sweden to study music I also got in touch with metal because we had many metalheads at school there. I have always been a little bit nerdy about singing techniques, I always wanted to experience more and more how to make every sound in a healthy way, just always discovering more and more, and I still work on it. I was also lucky to have an amazing singing teacher for several years! When I think back now, thanks to her, I am here vocalwise where I am now, because she really made a very nice base where I can build on it! I listen a lot also to Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston, they are my idols because they have such an incredible vocal technique and control! They are so versatile! They can do everything! I have always wanted to be like them”… but you know, I am working on it! I also really enjoy Eva Cassidy. She is wow! She doesn’t only sing, she tells a story! And this is just amazing! With her, it’s all about the story, it’s not only about beautiful singing, it’s also about everything behind it as well, and together it becomes a masterpiece! In metal for me Floor Jansen is my biggest one! She can do anything! Maybe someday I will manage to be as good as her!

I am sure you will! You are definitely getting there!

Another amazing detail of this album is the work done on the guitars by Jonas, who is your teammate both in Illumishade & Eluveitie. He has done a great work on the riffs and on the solos, both in the ballads and the heavy songs. He is not only technically phenomenal, he has also a great taste for melodies! Can you tell us how it has been working with him for the Illumishade project?

Fabienne: It was actually very nice to work with him! You know, with Eluveitie I am not so involved in the composing part, it’s mostly Chrigel and Jonas, I come more as an interpret, of course with some ideas as well but more as an interpret. Now with Illumishade I have a totally different role and I didn’t really know what to expect when we first met for two days to work together, to have some fun and try some stuff. And it was actually super nice! I think it is because we both have these two sides, he is also Disney princess! (laughs). He has this cheesy side and he has this heavy side such as I do, and it just worked really well! Almost every song has a different process on how it developed. What I love about Jonas is that he can be creative when it is needed. Like when we were in the mountains and the last evening, we were missing one song, we needed something more”… and he went like: “Ok leave me alone for 2 hours”…” and he came back with “World’s End”! The first big sketch with melody, chords and everything! I then added a bridge that he developed as well and it has really been like a ping pong of ideas between us which was very nice! He is a very good guitarist and it was a lot of fun working with him such as with the other guys. I just really enjoyed it and I am curious to see what we will come up with for the second album!

Wow! Are you already thinking about the second album then?

Fabienne: Yeah you know”… we have many ideas already and we are thinking about it”… but first we are finishing everything around this first one, with merch and so on in this difficult situation but we are resolving it. So yeah it will eventually come, slowly but surely! It will be a very busy year with Eluveitie next year too so we will see what we will come up with but of course we always have it in mind. I have ideas and the guys have ideas so when it will be the time, it will come!

Amazing! I am very enthusiastic about this! If you could pick 2 bands to go on tour with Illumishade, which one would they be?

Fabienne: I would pick Dream Theater and then Nightwish because I want to hear Floor Jansen every night! (laughs).

That would be an awesome lineup! I definitely hope this tour will happen one day!

We know it is still unfortunately not easy to make plans for the bands at the moment but is there anything you can already tell us about the future plans for Illumishade?

Fabienne: Yeah, it is really hard to say anything”… We have a live streaming festival coming up on the 21st of June called Tohuwabohu Festival with Cellar Darling and 2 other bands that I am really looking so much forward! It’s gonna be so much fun and I am so curious to see how it’s gonna work! I hope that I will be able to sneak peak a little bit to actually get a little feel of a live show again! Otherwise it is really hard to say when we will allow to play shows again”… I hope that we get to tour somewhen rather earlier than later! I can’t wait to play normal shows”… same with Eluveitie! We always keep an open mind, an open heart and just do the best out of it!

Definitely! We all can’t wait to go back to normal life, with real gigs and festivals happening normally and safely”… we all hope for the best and the sooner! Let’s keep fingers crossed!

Fabi, it has been an absolute pleasure, thank you so much for your kindness and for your availability! We wish you all the best for the future of both Illumishade and Eluveitie and we can’t wait to see you again on stage playing live with your bands! Do you want to say something to your Italian fans and our readers to conclude this interview?

Fabienne: Yes! Thank you so much for having me and thank you to everybody that has been reading until here! Stay safe, stay positive and I am looking forward to hopefully see you all live soon, face to face again!
