Abbiamo fatto due chiacchiere con Gabriel Keyes, nuovo cantante della sleaze band svedese Crashdiet, in arrivo in Italia il prossimo 25 aprile al Legend Club di Milano dopo parecchi anni di assenza dal nostro paese.

Ciao Gabriel e benvenuto su Long Live Rock‘n’Roll! Come stai?
Sto bene a parte che ho subìto un intervento ai denti 2 giorni fa quindi la mia faccia è un pò gonfia e fa un pò male haha”…
E’ passato tanto tempo da quando abbiamo avuto notizie dalla band e in molti avevano cominciato a dubitare sul futuro dei Crashdiet”… ma ora possiamo dire che i Crashdiet sono tornati! Com’è essere il nuovo cantante della band?
Sì anche io haha! E’ fantastico! Per me suonare in una band come i Crashdiet è un sogno che si avvera, li ascolto da anni da quando ero ragazzino. Ho grandi aspettative perché penso che la band abbia molto di piùda dare e il potenziale per raggiungere un livello piùalto!
Raccontaci qualcosa su di te e sulle tue esperienze musicali.
Il mio modo di cantare arriva da me stesso. E’ sempre stato lì da quando ho memoria! Ho sempre amato cantare ma non avevo il sogno di diventare un artista finché non vidi un live degli Skid Row a Wembley nel 1992 su YouTube quando avevo circa 15 anni. Da quel momento iniziai a sognare di diventare una rockstar haha. E anche mio fratello (Kriss Keyes) che suona negli Highride ha avuto un grande impatto su di me perché mi fece conoscere i Mötley Crüe e poi ho trovato gli Skid Row che mi hanno introdotto in questo mondo. Abbiamo fondato la prima band insieme quando io avevo 16 anni e mio fratello 22. Si chiamava “Opposite of Romance” haha. Abbiamo suonato per un po’ e tenemmo alcuni concerti nel giardino di casa alle feste e poi ci separammo. Due anni dopo io e mio fratello incontrammo un ragazzo (Jimmy Degreedos) e fondammo una nuova band chiamata Perfect Crime. Era una cosa piùseria e iniziammo a provare molto. Siamo rimasti insieme per 4 anni e abbiamo pubblicato su Spotify un EP intitolato “Wanted” tramite Spinnup (sito musicale per band senza contratto). Sicuramente non è piùdisponibile online oltre al singolo ’’Telling lies’’ che si può trovare su YouTube.
Com’è stata l’audizione? C’è voluto molto tempo prima che i ragazzi scegliessero te come nuovo cantante? Perché pensi abbiano scelto te?
In realtà ho incontrato Martin (Martin Sweet, chitarista ndr) prima di incontrare gli altri e insieme abbiamo scritto molte canzoni, si sentiva una grande chimica già dall’inizio. E dopo le prime prove eravamo tutti sulla stessa linea perché sembrava tutto molto naturale. Quindi eravamo tutti allo stesso punto! Dopo le prove siamo andati a bere birra in un parco e ci siamo divertiti molto! E’ stato tutto molto positivo e naturale fin dall’inizio, perciò già dopo le prime prove mi sentivo parte della band.
State lavorando a un nuovo album e quando pensate di pubblicarlo?
Giamo ancora scrivendo i pezzi ma il piano è di pubblicare l’album entro la fine dell’anno!
Recentemente avete annunciato alcune date e finalmente tornerete in Italia ad aprile. Sei emozionato? Sarà la tua prima volta in tour? Cosa ti aspetti?
Sì e sono così emozionato! Voglio partire ora! Voglio che sia aprile ora! Hahah
E’ la mia prima esperienza in tour perciò non vedo davvero l’ora! Ho grandi aspettative e sarà divertente conoscere i fan. Mi sono sentito accolto perché già dal primo giorno le persone mi hanno supportato e dimostrato affetto! Questo tour sarà come un pugno in faccia! Sono in fiamme haha 😉
Qual è la tua canzone preferita dei Crashdiet e perché?
Difficile scegliere ma direi “XTC overdrive” o “Tikket”.
Qual è il tuo gruppo preferito e da dove prendi ispirazione?
Skid Row e Guns perchè amo sia Axl che Sebastian col loro stile aggressivo!
Cosa ascolti di recente?
Tutto. Pop, rock, rap, country, soul. Sono aperto a tutto quindi non mi limito ad ascoltare solo un genere.
Ci sono molti gruppi interessanti provenienti dalla Svezia, qualcuno in particolare che vorresti suggerire ai nostri lettori?
Abbiamo tante band fighe! Confess è una di quelle che i lettori dovrebbero ascoltare. Non hanno avuto l’esposizione che meritano! Una grande band con belle canzoni e anche belle persone. E ovviamente se vi piace il Dirty Punk/RocknRoll dovreste ascoltare la band di mio fratello, Highride. Infine c’è una band in procinto di tornare che si chiama Sthlm Bandits. Sono senza dubbio la miglior RocknRoll/Punk band di Stoccolma quindi tenete gli occhi aperti!

I’m fine besides I had a tooth surgery 2 days ago so my face it’s a bit swollen and it hurts a bit haha”…
It’s been a while since we last heard something from the band and many people had started to wonder if Crashdiet were over”… but now we can definitely say Crashdiet are back! How does it feel to be the new singer in the band?
Yeah me to haha! It feels fantastic! It’s a dream coming true for me to play in a band like Crashdiet that I’ve been listen to for years since I was a little kid. I have big expectations ‘cause I think this band has much more to give and has the potential to reach a higher level!
Tell us something about yourself and your music experiences.
My singing comes from myself. It’s been there since I can remember! I have always loved to sing but never had like a dream of becoming an artist until I saw a live show with Skid Row from Wembley 1992 on YouTube when I was like 15 years old. From that point I always had the dream of becoming a rockstar haha. And also my brother (Kriss Keyes) who plays in the band Highride had a big impact on me cause he showed me Mötley Crüe and then I found Skid Row that really got me into this. We started our first band together when I was 16 and he was 22. It was called “Opposite of Romance” haha. We played for a while and had some shows on the backyard at home when we had a party and then we walked separate ways with the other guys. Two years later me and my brother met a guy called Jimmy Degreedos and we started a new band called “Perfect Crime”. This was more serious and we started to rehearse a lot. We were together for 4 years and we released an EP called wanted on Spotify trough Spinnup (Music site for unsigned bands). Certainly it’s not available anymore online beside the single ’’Telling lies’’ that you can find on YouTube.
How was the audition? Was it a long process before the guys decided to pick you as the new singer? What do you think made them chose you?
Actually I met Martin first before meeting the other guys and we wrote a lot of songs and it felt like we had a great chemistry from the start. And after the first rehearsal everybody was on the same point cause everything felt so natural. So everybody was on the same point! After the rehearsal we went out for some beer in a park and we had a really good time! So it felt very positive and natural from the start so after the first rehearsal I felt I was a part of the band.
Are you working on a new album and when are you planning to record it?
We still writing songs but the plan is to release the album at the end of this year!
You announced lately some tour dates and you guys are finally coming back to Italy in April. Are you excited? Will it be your first tour experience? What do you expect from it?
Yeah and I’m so excited! I just wanna go now! I want it to be April nooooow! Hahah
It’s my first time touring so I’m really looking forward to it! I have big expectations and it’s going to be so fun to meet all the fans out there. I have felt very welcomed to this band cause people have supported me and showed me love since day one! I think it’s going to be a punch in the face tour! I’m on fire haha 😉

Hard to pick but it think ‘XTC overdrive’ or ‘Tikket’.
What’s your favorite band and where do you get your inspiration from?
Skid Row and Guns cause I love both Axl and Sebastian with their aggressive style!
What are you listening to lately?
Everything. Pop, rock, rap, country, soul. I’m very open so I don’t just listen to one music genre.
There are many interesting bands in the scene coming from Sweden, any in particular you feel like suggesting to our readers?
We have a lot of cool bands! Confess is one band your readers should check out. They haven’t get the exposure that they deserve! Great band with great songs and also great guys. And of course if you like Dirty Punk/RocknRoll You should check out my Brothers band Highride. At last I got a band that is doing a comeback soon and they are called Sthlm Bandits. They are without a doubt stockholms best RocknRoll/Punkband so keep your eyes open!
