Con enorme piacere faccio due chiacchiere con Liv Jagrell che, dopo 15 anni di Sister Sin e cinque lavori in studio, ritorna sulle scene metal con un nuovo progetto Liv Sin e un nuovo album ‘Follow Me’.
Ciao Liv, bentornata sulla scena musicale! Hai appena pubblicato il debut album del tuo progetto solista, “Follow Me”, un disco heavy metal vero e proprio. Sei soddisfatta del risultato?
Ciao Elena e grazie a te!
Sì, siamo molto soddisfatti! E’ stato un processo intenso mettere insieme questo album. Abbiamo avuto un inizio frenetico. Io e Patrick abbiamo scritto la maggior parte dei pezzi durante l’estate e autunno 2016 e le registrazioni hanno avuto luogo subito dopo. In realtà non abbiamo avuto nemmeno una line up completa fino all’inizio del 2017. Ma con questa band volevo scrivere musica che fosse più“me”, per così dire. La musica è piùheavy e aggressiva rispetto ai Sister Sin ed è esattamente quello che volevo fare.
Mi piace il titolo dell’album”… ma come mai ‘Follow Me’”… E’ una richiesta, un invito ai tuoi fan per essere parte di questo progetto”…
Il titolo “Follow Me” può essere interpretato in diversi modi, e ha anche piùdi un significato. Per esempio la copertina del disco mostra delle persone (la band) che hanno un segno sugli occhi, seguono me che esco dalle ombre. La frase “seguimi” oggi è connessa ai social media. Però sì, la risposta piùevidente è una chiamata a tutti i peccatori, i nostri fan, per seguirci. E il dove seguirci lo potranno trovare nei testi delle canzoni, se le ascoltano attentamente!
Puoi dirci qualcosa sulla registrazione e composizione?
All’inizio ho subito capito che sebbene io sappia suonare la chitarra, non sono però in grado di riprodurre il tipo di riff che mi servivano. Quindi quando Patrick è salito a bordo, la composizione è avvenuta con me in primo luogo che scrivevo I testi e le line vocaliche, mentre lui componeva i riff. E insieme al nostro batterista abbiamo arrangiato i pezzi. La registrazione del disco ha avuto luogo sia in Svezia che in Germania. E’ stato prodotto da Fitty Wienhold (U.D.O.) e Stefan Kaufmann (ex-Accept & ex-U.D.O.). Durante le registrazioni delle voci, Stefan Kaufmann mi ha guidato e spinto verso delle urla molto alla Halford. E’ stato uno spasso!
Com’è andata la collaborazione con Stefan Kaufmann e Fitty Wienhold?
La collaborazione è stata fantastica! Mi sono proprio divertita! Li abbiamo coinvolti da subito e Fitty ci ha aiutato piùcon gli arrangiamenti e I feedback nella parte iniziale, mentre Stefan ha messo le mani su registrazione e mixaggio.
Quale eredità porti con te in questo nuovo progetto dopo 13 anni di Sister Sin? E quali sono le principali differenze?
Sicuramente ho molta esperienza su come evitare gli errori che facevo appena arrivata sulla scena. Coinvolge tutto, dallo scrivere e registrare ”“ come tirar fuori il meglio di te. Ma anche riguardo cose piùpratiche come i tour, i Sister Sin si sono esauriti coi tour. Ci assicureremo di non rifarlo.
In tutti gli album c’è sempre qualcosa di nuovo, una nuova esperienza, una nuova fatica, una nuova sfida e ovviamente una nuova fase della vita”… Com’è cambiata Liv in tutti questi anni di carriera?
Molto ovviamente, ora sono molto piùmatura e prendo, spero, decisioni piùsagge. Ma di nuovo, stare in una band non cambia molto, suoni, viaggi, scrivi canzoni,registri, ti preoccupi dei soldi, perciò direi che la mia vita è quasi la stessa ma sono cambiata io come persona .
Avete in programma un tour per promuovere l’album? Avremo l’occasione di vedervi suonare qui in Italia?
Al momento non c’è nulla di confermato per l’Italia, ma dovete sapere che desideriamo e speriamo davvero di poter venire. Al momento siamo in procinto di programmare cosa succederà dopo l’estate da un punto di vista dei tour. Perciò assicuratevi di “seguirci” sui social media e vi prometto che non vi perderete nessuna news riguardo ai tour!
Credi sia sempre difficile per una donna essere musicista in generale e in particolare nell’heavy metal?
Non sempre, ma non credo che veniamo ancora giudicateper il modo in cui appariamo, come ci comportiamo, cosa indossiamo ecc. Nessuno critica se un membro maschile del gruppo ingrassa o ha un look strano. Penso riguardi la musica in generale ma soprattutto il metal e l’hard rock. La situazione è comunque migliorata, sento che c’è piùrispetto oggi verso le donne del rock e metal.
Qual è la tua traccia preferita dell’album e perchè?
“The Fall”, ha così tanta energia, è heavy, veloce e adoro cantarla!
La scena musicale si sta evolvendo molto rapidamente giorno dopo giorno”… dal download, agli mp3, o il nuovo prodotto ‘liquido’ come quello proposto da Spotify”… come influenzano questi cambiamenti la vita dei musicisti e la tua in particolare?
E’ una grossa domanda e difficile da rispondere completamente, dato che questo sviluppo è iniziato ai tempi di Napster. In generale posso dire che per i musicisti è diventato piùdifficile vendere la propria musica, ma è piùfacile raggiungere il pubblico. Allo stesso tempo, la quantità di musica a disposizione là fuori è così immensa che diventa difficile distinguersi e spiccare nella folla. Tutto ciò comporta che devi essere consapevole di come la scena cambia e devi metterci passione nel far musica, perchè una cosa non cambia ”“ raramente fai soldi da musicista, haha.
Grazie per il tuo tempo Liv, hai un messaggio per I tuoi fan italiani e i nostri lettori?

Hi Liv, welcome to Longliverocknroll.it and in general welcome back into the music scene! You just published your solo debut album, “Follow Me”, a really heavy metal record. Satisfied about it and why?
Hi Elena, and thank you!
Yes, we are very satisfied with it! It has been an intense ride getting this album together. We have had a very hectic start with the band. Patrick and I wrote most of it back in the summer and early autumn of 2016 and the recording took place right after that. And we didn’t have a complete line up until the start of 2017 actually. But with this band I wanted to write music that is more me, so to speak. The music is heavier and more aggressive than Sister Sin and that is exactly what I set out to do.
I like the title of the album”… but please, why ‘Follow Me’”… is it a request, an invitation to your fans to be part of this new project, or”…
The title “Follow Me” can be interpreted as several things, and it also does have more than one meaning. For example the cover art shows people (the band) that has the mark of the eye, follows me who steps out of shadows. The phrase “follow me” is also today widely connected to social media. But yes, the more evident answer is that it is a calling to all sinners, our fans, to follow us. And where they will follow us is somewhere they probably can find in the lyrics if they listen carefully!
Can you tell us something about the recording and songwriting?
Well in the very beginning I quickly realized, even though I can play guitar, that I couldn’t produce the type of guitar riffs that I needed. So when Patrick came aboard the songwriting took place primarily with me writing vocal melodies and lyrics, while he composed riffs. And together with our drummer we arranged the songs. The recording of the album took place both in Sweden and Germany. It was produced by Fitty Wienhold (U.D.O.) and Stefan Kaufmann (ex-Accept & ex-U.D.O.). While recording vocals Stefan Kaufmann was the one who guided me and really pushed me to do some crazy screams that was very Halford. It was a blast!
How was the collaboration with Stefan Kaufmann and Fitty Wienhold?
The collaboration was great! I had such a great time there! They were involved quite early on and Fitty helped us out more with the arrangements and feedback in the early stage while Stefan were more hands on concerning the recording and mixing.
What’s the heritage you bring with you in this new project after 13 years of Sister Sin? And what about the differences?
Well you certainly have a lot of experience on how to avoid the mistakes you did when you were new in the scene. It concerns everything from writing and recording ”“ how to push the best out of you. But also more practical stuff like touring, Sister Sin burnt out from touring you know. We will make sure not to do that.
In every album there’s something new, a new experience, a new effort, a new challenge and of course a new period of life”… How has Live changed during all this year of career?
It’s a lot of course , now I’m more grown up and hopefully make some wiser decisions etc. But then again, being in the band doesn’t change so much, you play, you travel, you write songs, you record, you worry about money, so maybe I would say that the life is pretty the same but I’ve changed as a person .
Are you planning a tour to promote the new album? Will we have a chance to see you play here in Italy?
Currently we have nothing confirmed for Italy, but you should know that we would love to come and hope to do so. We are right now in the middle of planning for what’s gonna happen tour-wise after the summer. So make sure to “follow us” on social media and I can promise you that you won’t miss out on any news concerning tours!
Do you think it is always har for a woman to be a musician in general and in heavy music in particular?
Not always, but I do think we are being judged much more, the way we look, the way we act, what we are wearing etc. Noone comment f your male bandmember gains weight or looks weird. I think that goes for the music in general but even more in metal and hard rock. It have gotten better though, I feel it’s much more respect these days towards women in rock and metal.
What’s your favourite track on the album and why?
“The Fall”, it’s just so much energy, heavy, fast and I love to sing that song!
Music scene is evolving day by day really quickly”… from downloading, to mp3, to new form of ‘liquid’ music such as the one offered by spotify”… how all these changes have influenced musicians’ life and yours in particular?
It is a very big question and hard to answer wholly to as this development started way back to the days of Napster. But in general you can say that it might have become harder for musicians to sell their music, but it’s easier to reach an audience. At the same time, the amount of music out there is so huge, which makes it really hard to come through and stand out in the crowd. It all comes down to that you have to be aware of how the scene changes and that you are passionate about making it, because one thing is the same ”“ you rarely have that much money as a musician, haha.
