Ho il piacere di fare un chiacchierata con Stamatis Syrakos, voce e chitarra di una potentissima nascente band greca, di Atene, Shadowmass, che propone un durissimo black metal con punte di thrash vecchio stile. Ho avuto modo di conoscere di persona Stamatis e ho apprezzato le sue qualità di musicista, un vero talento, e umane, persona gentile ed elegante. Con l’occasione dell’uscita del nuovo album degli Shadowmass, ho l’opportunità di rivolgergli alcune domande al ritorno del mini tour con Belphegor e Suffocation…
Prima di tutto congratulazioni per il vostro album, pieno di energia e potenza. Davvero pesante. Ma prima di parlarne, si è appena concluso un breve tour con Belphegor, Suffocation e Hate. Potresti raccontarci le tue prime impressioni su questa esperienza? E i concerti?
Ciao e grazie mille per le tue parole. È stato il nostro primo tour come SHADOWMASS, ed è stato un tour di grande successo. Abbiamo condiviso il palco con alcune band leggendarie e non vediamo l’ora di ripartire.
Il momento migliore e il peggiore, di questi 5 concerti. erano 5?
Ci sono stati 4 spettacoli (giorno libero incluso). Credo che il momento migliore sia stato a Bucarest. La folla è stata fantastica, così come la nostra esibizione. Non ricordo un brutto momento se non il locale troppo piccolo ad Atene, quello spettacolo meritava una location piùgrande.
Che mi dici delle altre band con cui avete suonato?
Abbiamo avuto l’opportunità di guardare e imparare da artisti esperti. Soprattutto i Suffocation sono stati assolutamente fantastici dentro e fuori dal palco.
Nel frattempo, un videoclip… un video total black. Perché la scelta di questa canzone ‘Exitium’?
E’ il brano di apertura del nostro album e (crediamo) il piùrappresentativo della nostra musica. Anche uno dei nostri brani preferiti.
È stato difficile realizzarlo? Attori e musicisti in play back…
Non proprio, c’è un playback, una riproduzione per le riprese video, naturalmente, ma il brano l’abbiamo suonato davvero, hahaha…
E ora parliamo del vostro album. Il primo. Impossibile da dimenticare? Come il primo amore?
Non lo dimenticheremo di certo. Ma non vediamo l’ora di pubblicare nuova musica perché creiamo continuamente nuove canzoni.
9 brani. Brani davvero pesanti, pieni di potenza e di energia. Thrash e black si sono fusi insieme, riff grandi e veloci, ritmo potente, una sorta di voce acida, wow. Cosa ci puoi dire dell’album?
Siamo contenti che ti sia piaciuto! È stato registrato ad Atene negli ultimi due anni e pubblicato attraverso la Soman Records (etichetta francese, ndr) nel dicembre 2019. Thrash e black fusi insieme sono un bel modo per descriverlo. Abbiamo affrontato molte difficoltà nel produrre questo album, ma alla fine è andato tutto bene.
Quali sono gli aspetti positivi di questo lavoro? E ce ne sono di negativi, soddisfatti?
Sì, lo siamo! Le recensioni sono ottime fino ad ora anche il feedback dei nostri fan è sorprendente. Quindi credo che sia un debutto di successo.
Thrash e black metal sono due generi “vecchi” nella vita metal e non hanno mai messo fine alla loro incredibile successo. Siete una band giovane composta da giovani musicisti. Questa passione per il thrash metal e il black metal è ancora viva? Perché questa passione per questi stili vecchi ma moderni?
La passione non finisce mai finché si compone nuova musica… per noi il black metal è un modo per esprimere il nostro disgusto per la società moderna. Combinato con l’aggressività del thrash metal, si ottiene il risultato finale.
Ma ci vuoi dire qualcosa degli Shadowmass? Chi siete? Le vostre passioni, le vostre esperienze precedenti… tutto, ciò che è possibile dire naturalmente…
Siamo 3 appassionati di ‘die hard metal’ di Atene e proponiamo la nostra musica preferita in modo incondizionato. Questa è la nostra passione. Abbiamo molte esperienze precedenti come singoli musicisiti che hanno suonato e suonano in diverse band, ma fintanto che esistono gli SHADOWMASS penso che il nostro tour con i Suffocation e i Belphegor sia il momento piùbrillante della band.
E avete altri progetti per il futuro?
Certo, vogliamo essere in tour il piùpossibile per la promozione del nostro album ed entrare presto in studio per il prossimo.

First of all congratulations for your album, full of energy and power. Really heavy. But before talking aout it, let’s talk about these latest events: your tour with Belphegor, Suffocation and Hate. Please, could you tell us your first impressions of this experience? What about the gigs?
Hello and thank you very much for your kind words. It was our first tour as SHADOWMASS, and it was a really successful one. We shared the stage with some legendary bands and we are looking forward to hit the road again.
The best moment and the worst one, of these 5 concerts. were they 5?
There were 4 shows (day off included). I think the best time was in Bucharest. The crowd was amazing so was our performance. I can’t recall a bad moment except the small venue in Athens, that show deserved a bigger place.
What about the other bands you played with?
We had the opportunity to watch and learn from experienced artists. Especially the Suffocation guys were absolutely amazing on and off stage.
In the meanwhile, a videoclip… a total black video. Why the choice of this song ‘Exitium’?
It is the opening track of our album and (we believe) the most representative of our music. One of our favorite tracks too.
Was it difficult to be realized? Actors musicians in playback…
Not really, there was a playback for the video shoot of course but we were really playing the song, hahaha…
And now let’s talk of your album. The first one. Impossible to be forgotten? Like the first love?
We will not forget it that’s for sure. But we are looking forward to release new music because we are constantly creating new songs.
9 songs, really heavy songs, full of power and energy. Thrash and black melted together, great and fast riffs, powerful rhythm, a sort of acid voice, wow. What can you tell us about the album?
We are glad you like it! It was recorded in Athens the last couple of years and released through Soman records in December 2019. Thrash and black melted together is a beautiful way to describe it. We faced a lot of difficulties producing this album but in the end everything turned out fine.
Which are the positive aspects of this work? And are there any negative ones, satisfied about it?
Yes we are! The reviews are great so far also the feedback from our fans is amazing. So I guess that it is a successful debut.
Thrash and black metal are two ‘old’ genres in metal life and they never ended their successful power. You are a young band composed by young musicians. This passion for thrash metal and black metal is still alive? Why this passion for these old but modern styles?
The passion never ends as long as new music is composed…for us, black metal is a way to express our disgust about modern society. Combined with razor sharp thrash metal aggression you get the final result.
But would you like to tell us something of Shadowmass? Who are you? Your passions, your previous experiences… everything, possible to be mentioned, of course…
We are 3 die hard metal fans from Athens serving our favorite music unconditionally. That’s our passion. We have a lot of previous experiences as Individuals playing in different bands but as long as SHADOWMASS exist I think that our tour with Suffocation and Belphegor is the band’s brightest moment.
And do you have other plans for the future?
Sure, we want to tour as much as possible for the promotion of our album and enter the studio for the next one soon.
