Come sempre la rete è sempre ricca di novità e di persone interessanti soprattutto nel campo musicale e personale. Correndo quà e là , come spesso mi piace fare, incontro una band nata in U.S.A. ma i cui membri provengono o, quelli che vi hanno suonato provenivano, da ogni parte del globo: The Maension. Metal particolare, rock moderno e molto di tendenza”… perchè non chiacchierare con loro tanto per conoscerli un po’ piùa fondo”… Devo ringraziare i coloratissimi Skye e Mark (nella foto di due musicisti a sinistra) per la loro gentile collaborazione ed eleganza, devo davvero ringraziarli per la loro disponibilità e anche perchè Mark, l’italiano Marco Ortoli, ha anche tradotto direttamente l’intervista”… doppio ringraziamento e approfitto per invitare i lettori di Longliverocknroll.it ai due show che i Maension terranno in Italia il 22 a Napoli all’Hades e il 23 a Genova al Crazybull”…

First of all you’re touring in this moment… how many dates did you perform? your dates in USA are completed, so what about your first impressions after those gigs?
Prima di tutto voi siete in tour in questo momento. Quante date avete già affrontato? LE vostre date in USA sono terminate, qual è la vostra impressione dopo quei concerti?
Skye: We just completed the first two months of our “à†vol World Tour 2015”. We did a coast to coast from Hollywood CA to New York. Touring is always an adventure and it was great connecting with new Fà†NS in all these different places! We were in cool places like New Orleans and Ney York and small charming cities like Jerome and Durango, it was a blast.
Skye: Abbiamo appena completato I primi due mesi del nostro “à†vol World Tour 2015”. Abbiamo fatto un “coast to coast” da Hollywood CA a New York. Essere in tour è sempre una avventura ed è grande essere in sintonia con nuovi Fà†NS (il nomignolo dei nostri seguaci) in tutti questi posti divesi! Siamo stati in posti molto fighi come New Orleans e New York ed in piccole città affascinanti come Jerome e Durango. E’ stato uno sballo!

”… in a couple of weeks in Europe and you are starting the European tour from Italy… wow… 2 dates, Naples and Genoa… How are approaching the long European tour (‘till June) and especially in Italy?
Fra qualche settimana sarete in Europa e voi iniziereta dall’Italia, due date, una a Napoli e una a Genova. Come vi state preparando per il lungo tour europeo (fino a giungo) e specialmente in Italia?
Mark: We are very excited to be back in Europe for the 4th tour in the last two years. Europe is a very different trip compared to USA and we have a lot of fans and friends we are looking forward to see again. This time we decided to do things a little different and bring a different show, we are still promoting our new album à†volution but on this run we’ll give it a twist and do a more intimate show then what our Fà†NS have seen on the last tours.
Mark: Siamo eccitati di essere di nuovo in Europa per il nostro quarto tour in due anni. L’Europa è un’esperienza molto diversa rispetto all’America, ed abbiamo molti fan ed amici che non vediamo l’ora di reincontrare. Questa volta abbiamo deciso di fare le cose in maniera un po diversa e portare uno spettacolo diverso, stiamo ancora pruomovendo il nostro nuovo album à†volution, ma in questo tour faremo uno show pià intimo di quello che i nostri fans hanno visto durante il tour precedente.

And what are your expectations thinking about the Italian audience? And what do Italian people have to expect from your shows?
Quali sono le vostre aspettative in riferimento a l pubblico italiano? E cosa gli italinai devono aspettarsi da voi?
Mark: We bring a sound and a style that is not very common in Italy, so anybody who is into American rock bands that push the envelope, is in for a treat. Our music is quite trippy and knowing the album beforehand allows the audience to have an even deeper experience and connection to the music, so I suggest you guys pick up a copy from our website (www.TheMaension.com) since it’s not available for streaming (the singles are though).
Mark: Portiamo un suono e uno stile che non è molto comune in Italia, per cui chiunque sia patito di gruppi rock americani che siano all’avanguardia, sarà ben soddisfatto. La nostra musica è piuttosto “trippy” e conoscere l’album in anticipo permette al pubblico di avere un’esperienza ed una connessione con la musica ancora piùprofonda, quindi consiglio di procurarvi una copia dell’ album dal nostro sito web (www.TheMaension.com) dal momento che non è disponibile in streaming (i singoli lo sono però).

Mark: As much as people love to romanticize about the music industry you are right being in a touring band is expensive, and you need to be willing to sacrifice everything else in your life in order to make music become your sole occupation as it is for us. No we are not rich, quite the contrary in fact, we are creative artists and business people with an infinite will to succeed and ready to make any sacrifice in name of the freedom that this lifestyle gives us.
Mark:  Per quanto la gente ami idealizzare l’industria musicale, hai ragione nel dire che essere in una band che va in tour è costoso, e bisogna essere disposti a sacrificare tutto il resto della propria vita, al fine di rendere la musica la propria unica occupazione, così come lo è per noi. No, non siamo ricchi, al contrario infatti.., noi siamo semplicemente persone molto artistiche, anche nelle questioni d’affari, e con una volontà infinita di avere successo e pronti a fare qualsiasi sacrificio in nome della libertà che questo stile di vita ci dà .

I know You told about Mark… he’s Italian… wow… Skye is from Russia, Jaey is form Germany… and Ivy? Multicultural band…
Parlando in precednza con Skye ho scoperto che Mark è italiano, Skye è Russa, Jaey viene dalla Germania”… e Ivy? Band multiculturale”…
Skye: The Maension has had many different lineups. Mark is the brain and soul behind the band. The Maension has had band members from all different places, USA, Mexico, Japan, Poland, Italy, Germany, Ukraine.. at the end of the day we are an international band so we welcome people of all different cultures.
Skye: The Maension ha avuto molte formazioni differenti. Mark è il cervello e l’anima dietro la band. The Maension ha avuto membri della band provenienti da molti luoghi diversi, USA, Messico, Giappone, Polonia, Italia, Germania, Ucraina .. alla fine noi siamo una band internazionale e siamo aperti ad accogliere persone di qualunque cultura.

And how is working with all this different cultures together?
Com’è lavorare con tutte queste differenti culture?
Skye: THE MAENSION is structured in a very specific way, Mark has a very defined vision of what he wants and how it needs to be done, so under his leadership the band can pretty much function regardless of where a person comes from, of course being a professional and having an understanding of the industry is a requirement to make this work.
Skye: THE MAENSION è strutturato in un modo molto specifico, Mark ha una visione molto definita di quello che vuole e di come il tutto vada fatto, quindi sotto la sua guida la band può tranquillamente funzionare indipendentemente da dove una persona provenga, naturalmente essere un professionista e avente una comprensione dell’ industria musicale è un requisito per fare questo lavoro e la mancanza di tale requisito e’ la ragione piu commune dei cambi di lineup frequenti.

Let’s talk about your kind of music, the music you usually play… You know I think you are not very well known in my country… What could you tell me to introduce ‘The Maension’? the birth… the style… everything… Future Rock… wow…
Parliamo della music ache suonate. Credo che sappiate di non essere molto conosciuti in Italia. Cosa potereste dire per presentare i Maension?, la nascita, lo stile”… tutto”… Il future rock”… wow..
Mark: Being known in a country depends on how much money you have to invest in things like radio play and publicists to get you on the big media outlets; it’s not a quality indicator. We are an indie band, we are doing it the old school way, getting on the road and gaining new fans one at the time with hard work and sweat. We find most bands aim at sounding like whoever is popular now, so these days in the metal world every band out there sounds like a rip-off of Periphery. The vision of THE MAENSION is to be original at all costs, from the music and the arrangements to the look and the live show we bring on tour. Being original is not the easy way, neither the commercial way, but we do what we do because of passion and we have no interest in being the 2nd best Djent band or whatever, we are aiming at the top, no matter how long it will take. So FutuRock is just a statement of the fact that we intend on bringing something new rather the rehashing some old genre or copying what’s hot at the moment.
Mark: Essere noto in un paese dipende da quanti soldi si ha per investire in cose come campagne radio e pubblicisti per arrivare sui grandi media; non è un indicatore di qualità . Siamo una band indie, stiamo facendo la strada “old school”, stando in tour non stop e guadagnando nuovi fan uno alla volta con il duro lavoro e il sudore. Molte band hanno l’obiettivo di emulare chi è popolare al momento, quindi di questi tempi nel mondo del metal ogni band suona come una brutta copia dei Periperhy. La visione dei MAENSION è di essere originali a tutti i costi, dalla musica agli arrangiamenti ed ai testi, dal look allo spettacolo dal vivo che portiamo in tour. Essere originale non è di certo il modo piùsemplice di fare musica a livello pro.., né è il modo piùcommerciale, ma noi facciamo quello che facciamo per passione e non abbiamo alcun interesse a essere la seconda miglior band Djent o qualsiasi altro genere del giorno, noi puntiamo in alto, non importa quanto tempo ci vorrà . Quindi FutuRock è una dichiarazione del fatto che noi intendiamo portare qualcosa di nuovo piuttosto che rimasticare qualche vecchio genere o essere un altra copia di ciò che è di moda in questo momento.

What about the line up… I mean about the changes regarding the line up?…
Che mi dite della lineup? Mi riferisco particolrmente ai cambi della formzaione”…
Mark: As I said before being in a touring band is not easy. I’d say 99% of musicians have no understanding whatsoever about how the industry really works. They have all these fantasies and dreams that are very disconnected from reality, so working with a person like that for a long term is not possible, you need to be a very special person with an infinite commitment to be a touring musician in 2015.
Mark: Come dicevo prima, essere in una band in tour non è facile. Direi che il 99% dei musicisti non ha alcuna comprensione di sorta di come l’industria musicale funziona davvero. Ci sono una serie di fantasie e sogni che sono completamente disconnessi dalla realtà . Lavorare con una persona così per un lungo periodo non è possibile, è necessario essere una persona molto speciale, con un impegno e forza di volontà infinita per essere un musicista di professione nel 2015.

I saw three videos in your website. What can you tell me about them… my favourite one is ‘Retrospection’… nice… how’s your relationship with videoclips?
Ho visto tre video sul vostro sito web. Che mi dite dei viseo? Il mio preferito è ‘Retrospection’… bello”… Com’è la vostra relazione con I video?
Mark: I shot that video. The song is very personal for me. It touches on the subject of love and being jaded about it. Living in Hollywood is quite an experience and very different then living in Italy. People act differently and relationships are different, after a while it changes you.. unless you don’t allow it.. The song is about experiencing everything you need without regrets (I fed the monster..) and then allow real love to strike you at the moment when you least expected it.
Mark: ho girato io quel video. La canzone è molto personale per me. Tocca il tema dell’amore e dell’essere scettico e distanziato dal soggetto. Vivere ad Hollywood è una esperienza molto diversa dal vivere in Italia. Le persone agiscono in modo diverso e le relazioni sono molto piùsuperficiali e finte, dopo un po’ ti cambia”… a meno che tu non lo permetta.. La canzone parla dello sperimentare tutto ciò che serve senza rimpianti (I fed the monster..)Â e poi lasciare che il vero amore ti colpisca nel momento in cui meno te lo aspettavi.

Skye: Yeah we have a new video done for Chrysalis (featuring Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit). It’s the heaviest song we have and we can’t wait to release it to the world!
Skye: Sì, abbiamo un nuovo video già completato per Chrysalis (con Fred Durst dei Limp Bizkit). E’ la canzone piùpesante che abbiamo e non vediamo l’ora di fare la release per i nostri fan in giro per il mondo!

Skye: We are entertainers, it’s our job to keep it fun 😉

What are your music influences”… I mean what kind of music do you use to listen during the day”… maybe when you do the washing-up”…?
Quali sono le vostre influenze musicali? Che tipo di musica ascoltate durante la giornata, magari quando lavate I piatti?
Mark: everybody in the band listens to slightly different stuff, personally I have my favourite records, but I routinely look for new bands, I don’t like being stuck in a specific decade or genre, you gotta keep your music taste fresh and let them evolve with the times.
Mark: Â Ognuno nella band ascolta musica leggermente diversa, personalmente io ho i miei dischi preferiti che ascolto da anni, ma regolarmente cerco nuovi gruppi, non mi piace essere bloccato in un decennio o genere specifico, mi piace mantenere i miei gusti musicali freschi e continuare ad evolvere con i tempi.

But now I’m curious about the cooperation with Freddy Durst…
Ma ora sono curioso della collaborazione con Freddy Durst...
Mark: That was really cool and spontaneous. I am a record producer and I have had a recording studio in Hollywood for many years. I was listening to the mix of Chrysalis real loud as I was preparing to record vocals on it. It was the last song on the album I needed to do vocals for. Fred was at the studio for other business and happened to hear the song playing from my studio since the door was open. He asked me if that was my song and he said he really dug it, so I invited him in and he was impressed with my room (I got a crazy amount of high end studio gear) long story short he asked to jam on it and he recorded a few tracks improvising vocals and lyrics. I was stocked! He was very different then how the media depicts him, he was super cool and chill, very friendly and a fucking pro, he put down a very intense track while improvising lyrics and I had to do barely any editing at all on those tracks! Fred ruled, I have big respect for him!
Mark: E ‘stato davvero cool e spontaneo. Io sono un produttore discografico e ho avuto uno studio di registrazione nel cuore di Hollywood per molti anni. Stavo ascoltando il mix di Chrysalis a volume forte, preparandomi per registrare la voce sulla canzone. Era l’ultima canzone dell’album che dovevo fare le voci. Fred era allo studio per altri affari suoi ed è successo cha ha sentito il brano proveniente dal mio studio visto che la mia porta era aperta. Mi ha chiesto se era la mia canzone e lui ha detto che era veramente impressionato, così l’ho invitato ad entrare e lui è stato colpito dalla mio studio (io ho una quantità pazzesca di apparecchiature da studio di altissima qualità ) per farla breve lui, mi ha chiesto di registrare sulla canzone e registrò alcune tracce improvvisando voce e testi. Io sono rimasto molto impressionato positivamente! Fred è molto diverso da come i media lo ritraggono, lui è super cool e amichevole, molto cordiale e un professionista micidiale, ha messo giùuna traccia veramente molto intensa improvvisando completamente e io non ho dovuto fare quasi nessun edit le sue trace sono tutte micidiali! Fred è un mito, ho grande rispetto per lui!

Are you having time for writing new songs”…?
Avete del tempo per scrivere nuovi brani?
Mark: time is something we always short on! But yeah we do have a lot of new material, some songs pretty much finished and a lot of new riffs and ideas that need some development. We are still working the current release and working on inking a proper record deal to put this album in front of a bigger audience, so the new album is still a way to go.
Mark: il tempo è sempre poco per noi! Ma sì noi abbiamo un sacco di nuovo materiale, alcune canzoni praticamente finite e un sacco di nuovi riff e idee che hanno bisogno di ulteriore sviluppo in studio. Stiamo ancora lavorando alla promozione di à†volution e stiamo lavorando verso un adeguato contratto discografico per mettere questo album di fronte ad un pubblico piùvasto. C’è ancora molta strada da fare prima del nuovo album.
