Ieri è uscito il secondo album degli Shiraz Lane, promettente band rock finlandese intitolato ‘Carnival Days’, lavoro molto interessato e denso di energia e ritmo. Quindi una chiacchierata con il frontman Hannes Kett serve ad introdurci in questo nuovo momento discografico del quintetto di Vantaa e farci conoscere un po’ meglio la band stessa”…

Ciao Hannes, benvenuto su Long Live Rock n Roll. Ho giusto avuto il piacere di ascoltare il vostro album di prossima uscita “Carnival Days” e lo adoro! Ci racconti qualcosa dell’idea che ci sta dietro?
Con “Carnival Days” diamo agli ascoltatori l’occasione di dare un’occhiata alle nostre vite. E’ una sorta di diario, nell’album puoi sentire temi diversi, che è l’essenza degli Shiraz Lane. Quest’album è la nostra vita, cuore, mente e anima del momento in cui abbiamo registrato.
Raccontaci qualcosa della composizione e registrazione dell’album.
E’ iniziato come al solito, jammando in sala prove. Dopo un po’ abbiamo avuto la fortuna di imbatterci in Mr. Per Aldeheim che ha prodotto l’album. Abbiamo pensato che fosse figo registrarlo fuori dalla Finlandia in uno stato di totale libertà , senza distrazioni. Dopo 5 fantastiche sessioni di pre-produzione nella bellissima città di Stoccolma, eravamo piùche pronti per iniziare le vere registrazioni. E’ stato fantastico lavorare con Per, è il tipo di persona a cui piacciono diversi generi ma torna sempre alle sue radici, l’Hard Rock. Quando i ragazzi sono partiti per Stoccolma per registrare gli strumenti, mi hanno lasciato con un ampio carico di emozioni, mi dispiaceva non essere lì con loro per condividere la corsa, ma allo stesso tempo ero piùche eccitato di essere in Finlandia, a prepararmi per cantare al massimo quando sarebbe arrivato il mio turno. E, oh boy, è esattamente quello che ho fatto. Ci abbiamo messo noi stessi e posso assicurarti che lo puoi sentire nell’album! Amo registrare, suonare con idee diverse, lavorare giorno e notte, assaporando ogni singolo istante trascorso nel regno magico qual è lo studio. Ho registrato le voci in tre studi diversi ed è stato fantastico.
Guardando indietro, non c’è nulla che avrei fatto diversamente, abbiamo dato tutti noi stessi e questa è la parte bella. Non penso di essere mai stato piùorgoglioso di qualcosa di quanto lo sia di “Carnival Days”.
Siete tutti molto giovani ma allo stesso tempo avete grande talento. Il vostro sound si differenzia da quello di altre giovani band provenienti dalla Scandinavia, penso che la parola corretta sia eclettico. Possiamo dire che questa è la chiave dietro il successo degli Shiraz Lane?
Non siamo solo un gruppo di ragazzi che suonano insieme. Siamo una famiglia. Viviamo per il brivido di suonare e scrivere le nostre canzoni. Viviamo e respiriamo gli Shiraz Lane. L’amicizia è la chiave del successo quando condividi il viaggio della vita e diffondi il messaggio degli Shiraz Lane in tutto il mondo.
Siamo 5 ragazzi innamorati della musica. Quando componiamo il nostro materiale, non pensiamo al genere in cui i media/le persone ci catalogano, scriviamo quel tipo di musica che risuona nelle nostre anime. E’ esattamente quello che dovresti fare, vivere la vita per cui sei nato. Non lasciare che siano gli altri a dirti come viverla.
“Carnival Days” ha un suono piùmaturo rispetto al debut album “For Crying Out Loud”. Come ritieni siate maturati musicalmente tra i due?
Beh posso dire che si sentono senza dubbio le migliaia di kilometri che abbiamo trascorso on the road divertendoci come matti. Come artista tendi ad evolvere e cambiare. Quando abbiamo iniziato il processo di composizione e scrittura, come al solito, non pensavamo a nulla in particolare. Avevamo in tasca alcune idee già da qualche anno e ci sembrava il momento giusto per trasformarle in canzoni. Abbiamo deciso di registrare un album che suonasse come volevamo, ossia IMMENSO con ganci melodici e ritmici come nessun altro. Ogni nota che suoniamo è unica perché puoi sentire la pura emozione che le sta dietro, ogni parola che canto ha un significato e puoi sentire quello che sto cantando.
Quest’album è molto personale, è come leggere il mio diario, il diario degli Shiraz Lane. Non mi vergogno di cantare delle difficoltà che affronto perché so che aiuteranno altre persone a combattere i propri demoni. La musica è il linguaggio universale che può aiutarti nei momenti bui quando sembra che non ci sia via d’uscita.
Il fatto è che noi Shiraz Lane non scriviamo le solite vecchie canzoni rock già sentite milioni di volte. Scriviamo canzoni che molti altri gruppi non osano nemmeno pensare. E’ quello che ci distingue da loro, la nostra sfrontata attitudine a dire e fare quello che altri non direbbero e farebbero.
Come sono nati gli Shiraz Lane?
Sono nati come un’idea mia e di Ana (batterista, N.d.A.) nel 2009/2010. Conosco Ana da quando eravamo bambini, 7 o 8 anni, e da allora siamo migliori amici, e cosa c’è di meglio che suonare nella stessa band figa insieme al tuo migliore amico? NULLA haha.
Ho scoperto il mio dono musicale nel 2009 quando cantai a scuola per la prima volta. Avevo sempre avuto orecchio musicale e stavo malissimo quando la gente cantava in modo stonato ma all’epoca pensavo fosse normale, tutti se ne accorgono no? Beh in realtà poi mi accorsi che mi sbagliavo parecchio hahha.
Riassumendo, trovammo Miki in questo forum musicale finlandese Muusikoiden Net, ma all’epoca Miki doveva fare il militare per tutto l’anno successivo. Il nostro primo concerto risale al 2011, quando suonammo alcune delle nostre prime canzoni scritte e una gran quantità di cover (come succede sempre quando sei agli inizi). Joel Alex si unì alla band nel 2014, qualche settimana prima di registrare “Out There Somewhere” e “Money Talks”. Abbiamo partecipato a “Hard Rock Rising”, una competizione negli Hard Rock Cafè in tutto il mondo. Sebbene vincemmo la versione finlandese del contest e la possibilità di suonare a Toronto (Canada), il premio piùgrande fu che la nostra manager Heta Hyttinen ci trovò proprio grazie a HRR e iniziò a lavorare con noi. Non saremmo qui senza di lei e tutte le altre meravigliose persone nel Team Shiraz Lane. Ora siamo una grande famiglia e lo adoro. Dopo due tour europei, l’EP di debutto, l’album di debutto, show in tutto il mondo (Giappone, Toronto, Wacken – Germania) e il secondo album in uscita “Carnival Days”, posso dire che gli anni a venire saranno molto fruttuosi. Ci dirigiamo verso i grandi palchi, in apertura a band leggendarie, molti show da headliner e tantissimi tour. NON VEDO L’ORA!!!
E la tua canzone preferita del nuovo album e perché.
E’ molto difficile sceglierne una o due perché sono tutte i nostri bambini preziosi. Le amiamo tutte. C’è una canzone per tutti nell’album, ognuna ha il potere di darti forza quando ti senti giù. Se devo sceglierne una allora “Shangri La”.
L’idea per “Shangri La” mi è venuta qualche anno fa. Stavo dormendo nel cottage estivo di mio padre e mi svegliai con questo sogno in cui suonavamo i cori di “Shangri La” sul palco di una qualche grandiosa arena. All’epoca eravamo ancora agli inizi e stavamo per separarci dal primo bassista. Anni dopo cercammo di scrivere la canzone per il debut album ma non ci sembrava giusta, e invece scrivemmo “Begging For Mercy” dalla composizione su cui stavamo lavorando.
Sentivo che era il momento di avere “Shangri La” scritta e registrata per il secondo album così abbiamo ricominciato, solo dai cori. Questa volta era giusta e suonava esattamente come doveva essere. E’ molto melodica, con un testo che parla dei miei pensieri sulla vita che vivo in generale. Vivo col motto “Come dev’essere”, ma comunque a volte penso a come sarebbe la mia vita se avessi preso una strada diversa. Penso sia normale e questo è il bello, non saprai mai come avrebbe potuto essere. Un altro motto con cui vivo è tratto dal testo di “Shangri La”, “Vivi ogni giorno come fosse l’ultimo, perdona e dimentica per trovare la tua strada” ”“ vivi la vita al massimo perché sei vivo e sfruttala al meglio. Non ha senso stressarsi per cose che avrebbero potuto essere ”“ siamo noi che scriviamo la nostra storia, perciò rendiamola meritevole di essere letta.
Lo scorso autunno siete stati in tour con una grande band, Brother Firetribe, com’è stato dividere il palco con loro? Qual è il tuo ricordo piùbello del tour?
Il mio ricordo piùbello è l’aver condiviso il palco con persone meravigliose. La band e la crew si sono presi cura di noi, rendendoci parte della loro famiglia. Abbiamo condiviso un autobus a due piani, ci hanno raccontato storie sui loro inizi on the road. E’ stato fighissimo e lo rifarei, in qualsiasi momento.
Durante l’ultimo concerto insieme abbiamo partecipato sul palco al loro bis con “I Am Rock”, riassume bene l’intera vibrazione del tour, un gruppo di scimmie sul palco che suonano al massimo. Ho amato ogni secondo.
Da dove trai ispirazione per la tua musica?
I ragazzi della band, le persone che ho nella mia vita, Madre Terra e la vita in generale. Sono ispirato da tutto ciò che accade intorno a me. Se mi chiedi di band/artisti che mi ispirano, Michael Jackson è decisamente quello che mi ispira di più. Il Re del Pop, era qualcosa di unico e la sua musica vivrà per sempre. A parte questo, la musica che ascolto cambia ciclicamente, in questo momento sono assorbito da The Script, Astrid S, Hanoi Rocks, The Struts, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Janis Joplin, Toto e la lista va avanti.. Uno dei miei cantanti preferiti ha pubblicato un nuovo album recentemente, Mr. à…ge Sten Nilsen (Wig Wam, Ammunition). Il nuovo album si chiama “Ammunition” e hanno due album all’attivo, dateci un occhio! I ragazzi della band hanno tutti diversi artisti preferiti ma condividiamo molti di essi.
Quali sono i piani futuri? Un tour in supporto dell’album? Possiamo aspettarci di vedervi presto in Italia?
Sicuramente faremo un tour a supporto dell’album, nel prossimo futuro, abbiamo grossi progetti ma non possiamo condividerli al momento. Ci sarà un tour europeo a un certo punto e anche alcuni show fuori dall’Europa perciò restate sintonizzati!!

Sono stato diverse volte in Italia e i nostri fan sono meravigliosi. Mi piace suonare per voi, cantate sempre con noi e ci fate sentire i benvenuti. Hi Hannes, welcome to Long Live Rock n Roll, this is Elena speaking. I just had the pleasure to listen to your last album “Carnival Days” and I really love it! Can you tell us something about the idea behind it?
With “Carnival Days” we give our listeners a chance to take a peek into our personal lives. It is a diary of sorts, within the album you’ll hear different themes, which is the essence of Shiraz Lane. This album is our life, heart, mind & soul at the time of the recordings.
Tell us something about the songwriting and recording of the album.
It started out as it usually does, jamming around at our rehearsal space. After a while we were lucky enough to stumble across Mr. Per Aldeheim who was the producer on this album. We thought it would be cool to record the album outside of Finland in state of total freedom, without distractions. After 5 amazing pre-production sessions in the beautiful city of Stockholm we were more than ready to start the actual recording of the album. It was amazing to work with Per, he’s the kind of guy that’s into all sorts of different genres but always comes back to his roots, Hard Rock. When my guys left for Stockholm to record the instrumentals for the album, I was left with a wide range of emotions, I was a bit sad that I wouldn’t be there with them to share the ride, but at the same time I was more than stoked to be in Finland, getting ready to sing my ass off when my time came. And oh boy, that was exactly what I did. We all gave it all we had and I can assure you, you can definitely hear it on the album! I love recording, to play around with different ideas, working day and night, savoring every single moment spent in the magical realm which is the studio. I got to record vocals in three different studios which was awesome.
Looking back at it, there’s nothing I would’ve done differently, we gave it all we had at the time, and that’s the beauty of it. I don’t think I’ve ever been as proud about anything as I am about “Carnival Days”.
You all are very young but very talented at the same time. Your sound is a bit different from the other young bands coming from Scandinavia, I think the right word is eclectic. Can we say this is the key behind the success of Shiraz Lane?
We aren’t just a group of guys playing together. We are family. We live for the thrill of playing and writing our songs. We live and breathe Shiraz Lane. Friendship is the key to success when you’re sharing the journey of life & spreading the message of Shiraz Lane all over the world.
We are 5 guys that are in love with music. When we compose our stuff, we don’t think about the genre the media/people put us in, we just write the kind of music that resonates with our souls. That’s exactly what you’re supposed to do, live the life you are born to live. Don’t live the life other people tell you to live.
“Carnival Days” sounds more mature than your debut album “For Crying Out Loud”. How do you think you have musically grown in between?
Well I’d say you can definitely hear all the countless miles we’ve spent on the road having the times of our lives. As an artist you tend to evolve & change. When we started the process of composing & writing, as usual, we didn’t think about anything in particular. We had some ideas in our pocket since a few years back and felt that the time was right to turn those ideas into songs. We set out to record an album that sounds the way we want it to sound aka HUGE with melodic and rhythmic hooks like no other.
Every note we play sounds unique because you can sense the pure emotion behind it, every word I sing has a meaning & you can feel what I’m singing.
This album is very personal, it is as if you are reading my diary, the diary of Shiraz Lane. I’m not ashamed to sing about the struggles I’m going through because I know it will help other people fight their demons. Music is the universal language that can help you through dark times when it seems there’s no way out.
The thing about Shiraz Lane is that we don’t just write the same ol’ rock songs which you’ve heard a million times. We write the songs that many other rock acts don’t even dare to think about. That’s what sets us apart from other acts, our fearless attitude to do and say what others won’t.
How was Shiraz Lane born?
It started as an idea me & Ana had back in 2009/2010. I’ve known Ana since we were kids, 7 or 8 years tops, and we’ve been best friends ever since, so what can be better than to be in the same ass kicking band with our best friend? NOTHING haha.
I found the gift of music in 2009 when I sang in school for the first time. I’d always had the ear for music and felt horrible when people sang out of tune, but at that time I thought that’s normal, everyone can hear it, right? Well as it turns out, I was very wrong hahha.
Long story short, we found Miki from this Finnish music forum Muusikoiden Net, but at time Miki had to go to the army where he spent most of the following year. We had our first gig in 2011, where we played a few of our first songs we’d written + a shitload of covers ( as it tends to be when you’re just getting started). Joel Alex joined the band in 2014, a few weeks before we went to record Out There Somewhere and Money Talks. We participated in “Hard Rock Rising”, which is a competition in Hard Rock Cafes all around the world. Even though we won the Finnish version of the contest and got to play in Toronto (Canada), the grand price for us was the fact that our lovely manager Heta Hyttinen found us via HRR and started working with us. We wouldn’t be here without her and all the other lovely people we’ve got in Team Shiraz Lane. We are big family now, and I love it. After two European tours, our debut EP, our debut album, shows all around the world (Japan, Toronto, Wacken – Germany) and our upcoming second album Carnival Days I’d say the years ahead are going to be very fruitful. We’re heading for the big stages, opening up for legendary acts, lots of our own headlining shows and a whole lot of touring. I CAN’T WAIT!!!
Your favorite song on the new album and why.
It’s very hard to pick one or two songs because they’re all our precious babies. We love every single one. There’s a song for everyone on the album, every song has the quality to give you strength when you’re feeling blue. If I have to choose one, I’ll choose “Shangri La”.
I came up with the idea for “Shangri La” a few years back. I was asleep at my dad’s summer cottage and woke up to this dream I had. In this dream we were playing the chorus for Shangri La on the stage of some random grandiose arena. At this point we were just getting started and we were actually about to depart with our first bass player. Years later we tried to write the song for the debut album but we didn’t feel right, and we actually wrote “Begging For Mercy” from the composition we’d been working on.
I really felt it was time to get “Shangri La” written & recorded for the second album so we started all over again, with nothing more than the chorus. This time we got it right and it sounds exactly the way it’s supposed to be. It’s very melodic with the lyrics being about my thoughts about the life I live in general. I live by the motto “Meant To Be”, but still at times I’m thinking about what life would’ve been like if I embarked on a different road. I think that’s natural, and that’s the beauty of it, you’ll never know what could’ve been. Another motto I live by is from the lyrics I wrote for Shangri La, “Live Each Day Like It’s Your Last, Forgive And Forget To Find Your Path” – live life to the fullest as long as you’re alive & make the most of it. There’s no use in stressing about things that might’ve been ”“ we are the ones to write our story, so make it worth reading.
Last fall you were on tour with a big act like Brother Firetribe, how was sharing the stage with them? What’s your best memory of this tour?
My best memory is the fact that I got to share the stage with such beautiful human beings. The band & their crew took care of us, made us part of their family. We got to share a double-decker with them, hear all the stories they had from being on the road. It was a blast, and I’d do it again, anytime.
On our last gig together we got to share the stage on their encore “ I Am Rock”, it pretty much sums up the whole vibe of the tour, a bunch of monkeys on stage playing their asses off. I loved every second of it.
Where do you get inspiration for your music?
The guys in the band, all the people I have in my life, Mother Earth & life in general. I’m inspired by everything happening around me. If you’re asking about the bands/artists that inspire me, Michael Jackson is definitely the one who inspires me the most. The King Of Pop, he was something so unique and his music will live forever. Apart from that the music I listen to changes in cycles, right now I’m really into The Script, Astrid S, Hanoi Rocks, The Struts, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Janis Joplin, Toto the list goes on and on and on.. One of my favorite vocalists came out with a new album recently, Mr. à…ge Sten Nilsen (Wig Wam, Ammunition). The new album is called “Ammunition” and they’ve got two albums out now, so check them out! All of the guys in the band have different favorites but we share most of them.
What are your future plans? Any tour in support of the new album? Can we expect to see you soon playing in Italy?
We are definitely going to tour supporting the album, but that’s in the future to come, we’ve got big plans but we can’t share them right now. We’ll have a European tour at some point and some shows outside Europe as well, stay tuned folks!!
