John Barbata nasce il 1 aprile 1945 a Passaic, nel New Jersey, da Martina e Charles Barbata. È cresciuto a Saranac Lake, New York , fino all’età di sette anni e successivamente a Nutley, nel New Jersey.
E’ famoso come batterista attivo soprattutto nelle band pop e rock negli anni ’60 e ’70, sia come membro fisso che come turnista. Barbata ha lavorato come batterista per The Turtles, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Jefferson Airplane (solo per il suo ultimo album e tour), Jefferson Starship (dal 1974 al 1978) e Sammy e Holly Rebs con il chitarrista Sam DeLuca.
All’età di 33 anni, Barbata si ritirò e costruì una casa e uno studio di registrazione nel remoto villaggio di sequoie di Comptche, in California. Ha continuato a fare musica con la moglie Angela Evans (1961-2016), pubblicando due album insieme, California e Oklahoma. Nel 1987 è nata la loro figlia Leah. In seguito si sono trasferiti nella città natale di Ada, in Oklahoma.
