La band newyorkese PRONG con il suo leader TOMMY VICTOR sta per rilasciare l’ultima fatica questo 6 ottobre, si chiama “State of Emergency” ed esce con la Napalm Records, potete assagiarne una fetta col singolo “Non-Existence” qui di seguito:
Se vi aspettate chitarre titaniche, un suono tuonante e l’etichetta “heavy metal” che sta un po’ stretta a questa band eclettica che martella dal 1986 allora non rimarrete affatto delusi.
Abbiamo avuto l’opportunità di intervistare Tommy durante il tour di Danzig: ricordiamo ai nostri lettori che il nostro eroe, a parte suonare con la sua band PRONG, è il chitarrista per Danzig e fu anche parte della lineup live dei Ministry.
Bando alle ciance e sentiamo cosa Tommy ha da dire a proposito di questa elettrizzante novità:
Prima di tutto congratulazioni per il nuovo singolo “Non-existence”, ricordo ai nostri lettori che il nuovo album “State of Emergency” è in uscita il 6 di Ottobre 2023. Il muro di suono è impressionante, ma non mi aspettavo nulla di diverso da te sinceramente! Tutti aspettiamo un tour mondiale per promuovere il disco e la mia prima domanda è: suonerete anche in Italia? La mia patria di origine ti apprezza sinceramente e sono pronto a scommettere che sarebbe un successone.
TOMMY: Oh grazie per le belle parole! Faremo un tour anche in Europa , ma sfortunatamente non approderemo in Italia quest’anno, magari il prossimo.
la seconda domanda è a proposito del tour americano, mi aspetto di poter prendere il biglietto prestissimo, esiste già un calendario delle date?
Per ora abbiamo un solo show in programma il 20 ottobre a Clifton, New Jersey.
Cosa sarà diverso dall’ultima volta che ti ho visto in California pochi anni fa?
Beh ci saranno le nuove canzoni. Ne suoneremo un paio da ‘No Absolutes’, una da ‘Zerodays’ e almeno 3 da ‘State Of Emergency‘.
Come artista cos’è più divertente, comporre e suonare con la tua band o suonare come ospite nelle band di caratura mondiale con le quali suoni al di fuori del progetto PRONG? Non sto chiedendo cosa preferisci, ma se c’è un feeling differente e come approcci questi due mondi paralleli.
Suono solo con DANZIG al di fuori dei PRONG. È un’esperienza completamente diversa perchè devo suonare parti scritte da altri in canzoni scritte da altri. Ci sono dei dischi di Danzig che ho registrato io, ma non sono cosi’ noti al pubblico.
Lui preferisce suonare live le canzoni meno recenti. Non sono sicuro quanto sia “divertente” tutto questo, è una continua sfida. Sono tipicamente molto nervoso quando devo suonare in palchi di quel tipo, le cose cose possono andare male per innumerevoli motivi.
Mi sembra di stare in un ring di pugilato, sembra che io stia sempre combattendo, quando va tutto bene e vinco allora sono contento.
Sono stato un fonico per diversi anni e questo mi ha aiutato un pochino nella mia esperienza amatoriale da chitarrista, so che hai tu hai questa esperienza, ti prendi ancora cura del suono della tua band o ti appassioni ancora a settare il mixer per le tue serate?
No assolutamente no, sarebbe anche un po’ difficile no? Anche quando proviamo non mi arrischio più a maneggiare gli aggeggi audio che abbiamo…
Questa domanda è dedicata agli innumerevoli maniaci della chitarra che ci seguono: il tuo suono di chitarra è qualcosa che non puoi fare finta di ignorare se sei un amante dello strumento. Massiccio, violento, distorto, ma allo stesso tempo nitido. Vedo che utilizzi i nuovi amplificatori digitali, ci racconti cosa ti ha portato dai pesanti amplificatori a valvole di vecchio stampo all’ultima tecnologia? È un argomento che viene molto dibattuto nella comunità dei chitarristi, il tuo punto di vista potrebbe darci un’angolazione interessante.
Non sopporto l’inconsistenza degli amplificatori a valvole. Anche se non cambiano in realtà cambiano a ogni show, non ti puoi fidare. Il mio Kemper è SEMPRE lo stesso. Non hai bisogno di microfoni, l’uscita audio è perfetta. Non hai nemmeno bisogno di quei rumorosi pedalini, odio il loro ronzio. Io ho una serie di effetti digitali inclusi nel mio Kemper che uso anche in studio, non solo dal vivo. È tutto dentro l’amplificatore digitale o è un plugin di qualche software che uso. L’ampli ha anche un poderoso finale per le casse, tutto in un blocco unico, non ho bisogno di nient’altro. È tutto in una piccola chiavetta USB: affitto un Kemper in qualsiasi angolo del pianeta e ottengo il mio suono sempre, ovunque, identico.
I tuoi testi sono sempre originali, appassionati e ovviamente intensi, quanto di te c’è dentro quelle parole?
Ultimamente cerco di mettermi nella testa degli altri molto di più. Invecchiando sento meno la necessità di introspezione, non mi importano più le mie insicurezze e miei problemi come invece facevo in passato. Non mi piacciono per niente le attitudini da bambino piangente di molte delle band metal del momento. Credo che i miei testi in qualche modo celebrino la vita, ha molto senso. Insomma, imbraccia la chitarra, muovi il culo e smettila di sentirti in colpa o fare la vittima. Che senso ha dare la colpa a chiunque altro per qualsiasi motivo, se le cose non vanno bene dai prima la colpa a te stesso.
Qual è l’ultimo disco che hai comprato?
Era circa 10 anni fa, un disco dei Reflection.

You will be not disappointed if you expect big guitars (a lot), a massive sound and the label “heavy metal” being too tight for this eclectic band that is running nonstop since 1986.
We had an opportunity to interview Tommy while on tour with Danzig: we remind that our hero, beside working with his own band PRONG, is the guitar player for Danzig and was also part of Ministry prior to this engagement.
Let’s cut to the chase now and listen what Tommy has to say about this exciting new release:
First of all, congratulation for your new single “Non-existence”: I remind to our readers that the album “State of Emergency” will be out October the 6th. The wall of sound is impressive, but I didn’t expect anything different from you to be honest! We all expect a worldwide tour to promote it and my first question is: will you tour in Italy as well? My former country definitely loves you and, I am willing to bet, you’ll be sold out.
TOMMY: Oh thank you for the kind words! We do have a European tour in November, but unfortunately we aren’t hitting Italy on the tour. Maybe next year
Second question is about the USA Tour as I live here now, so I definitely expect to book my ticket for the event, will you release a calendar in October?
We are only doing one show in USA at the moment. October 20 Dingbatz in Clifton NJ.
What will be different, if anything, from last time I saw you in Fullerton, CA few years ago?
Well there’s been some new records. We play a couple from ‘No Absolutes’ and one ‘Zerodays’ song as well as 3 from ‘State Of Emergency’.
As an artist what is more fun, compose and tour with your band or slam your guitar with the countless world-class bands you play with outside Prong? Not asking for a preference, just if there’s a different feeling and approach between those 2 parallel worlds.
I only play with Danzig outside of Prong. That’s a whole different experience because I’m playing other people’s parts on other people songs. There are Danzig records I play on but they’re not that popular. He does justly old stuff. I don’t know how “enjoyable” any of it is. IT’s always challenging. I’m usually nervous about doing shows at this level. Things go wrong a lot. It seems like I’m always battling. It’s like a boxing match. When it goes well and I win it’s good.
I’ve been a sound engineer for many years, and this helped me a little while playing, I know you have this background as well, do you still take care of the band’s sound and do you still enjoy tuning the PA and your personal sound?
No I don’t. That would be a little difficult, no? Even at our rehearsal spot, I don’t like fooling around with the pa and stuff nowadays.
This is for the countless guitar-maniac out there, your sound is something that you can’t ignore if you love the instrument: punchy, fat, distorted but clear; I see that you use a lot of modern digital profiler amplifiers, can you tell me what was the process that drove you from old-style tubes to state-of-the-art technology? It’s a hot topic and today’s guitarists debate a lot; your point of view will give us an interesting angle.
I can’t stand the inconsistency of tube amps. Even if they really don’t change, I believe they do from show to show. You can’t trust them. The Kemper is ALWAYS the same. You don’t need mics. The direct out sounds great. Also, you do t need pedals. I hate the pedal’s noise. More stuff to power. Having digital effects including a wah and expression pedal digitally sold me on the Kemper. I don’t even use pedals that much in the studio anymore. It’s all in the Kemper or some virtual amp or plug in. The powered Kemper had slot of power too. It’s all there in one piece. AND it’s all on a thumb drive. I rent a Kemper and my sound is anywhere, everywhere.
Your lyrics are always original and passionate and indeed strong, tormented. How much of you is inside those words?
I put myself in the minds of others more these days. As I get older, I feel less of me. I don’t care about my insecurities and problems as much as I used to. I really don’t like the whiny baby attitude of a lot of metal bands. I think most of my songs celebrate life in a way. It makes sense. As doing as you pick up the guitar you get off your ass and stop feeling sorry for yourself. Why resort to that, blaming everyone else for everything. If anything, blame yourself.
Which is the latest record that you bought?
I think it was like 10 years ago. It was a Reflections record.
