Intervista con i Crazy Lixx – Long Live The Eighties

Il loro ultimo album “Ruff Justice” è stata sicuramente una delle release piùapprezzate in campo hard rock di questa prima metà  del 2017 (qui potete andare a rileggervi la nostra recensione) e la loro recente esibizione al Frontiers Rock Festival IV li ha confermati come uno dei live act piùesplosivi e coinvolgenti della scena attuale. Stiamo ovviamente parlando degli svedesi Crazy Lixx: abbiamo avuto la possibilità  di intervistare la sezione ritmica della band di Malmö – il batterista Joél Cirera ed il bassista Jens Sjöholm – e non ce la siamo fatta sfuggire. Ecco come è andata.

LLRNR: Ciao ragazzi e benvenuti a LongliveRockNRoll! Prima di tutto, parliamo del vostro nuovo album “Ruff Justice” che è uscito il mese scorso. Avete affermato di aver provato a recuperare in questo lavoro lo stesso feeling di “New Religion” e posso dire con certezza che chiunque può qui ritrovare il sound e lo spirito proprio degli anni 80, grazie ad una serie di ritornelli accattivanti e di cori potenti. Si è trattato di una scelta intenzionale o è tutto venuto fuori in maniera spontanea e naturale? 

Joél: E’ stata una cosa decisamente voluta e intenzionale! Abbiamo parlato molto tra di noi a proposito di cosa sono i Crazy Lixx e di tutte quelle cose che aiutano a definire il nostro sound. “New Religion” è l’album che i nostri fans amano di piùe quando Danny (Rexon, il cantante, ndr) si è messo a scrivere le canzoni per il videogioco “Friday the 13^th ” abbiamo ritenuto che quella fosse la giusta direzione da intraprendere. Quelle canzoni sono un po’ piùdrammatiche del solito per noi, ma possiedono il feeling e l’atmosfera giusta che volevamo: così, quando è stato il momento di comporre i brani per il resto dell’album, abbiamo cercato di scrivere canzoni che fossero sì influenzate dagli anni ’80, ma anche molto varie come stile, come da nostra abitudine. Su questo nuovo album potete trovare canzoni piùdure e drammatiche come “XIII” e “Kiss Of Judas“, ma anche brani piùtranquilli e dalle tematiche più“leggere” come “Walk The Wire“: c’è un po’ di tutto per accontentare chi ama questo tipo di musica.

LLRNR: Che ci dite del titolo “Ruff Justice” e della copertina dell’album. Sono anche loro entrambi molto 80s style, non credete? 

Jens: Beh, come hai detto tu l’intero album è come un viaggio indietro negli anni ottanta – almeno nelle cose positive di quegli anni – e con la copertina abbiamo cercato di ricatturare lo spirito delle locandine cinematografiche di quell’epoca.

LLRNR: Quali canzoni pensate siano le piùrappresentative del nuovo album? C’è qualche canzone che amate in maniera particolare, sia a livello di testi che a livello musicale? 

Joél: Penso che l’intero album sia molto variegato e questa è una cosa che ho sempre apprezzato dei nostri dischi. Personalmente adoro “Walk The Wire“, ma non mi sentirei a disagio a suonare dal vivo una qualsiasi delle nuove canzoni, dal momento che credo davvero che ognuna di esse meriti di essere sul disco. 

Jens: Ragionando da fan, direi “XIII“, “Snakes In Paradise” e “Walk The Wire“, non solo perchè sono le mie preferite, ma anche perché, leggendo le recensioni dell’album, queste canzoni sono spesso menzionate come quelle che spiccano maggiormente. 

LLRNR: Avete rivoluto sul banco di produzione Chris Laney. L’album precedente era stato prodotto da voi stessi stesso e lui si era occupato del solo missaggio. Credete che Chris sia la persona piùgiusta per catturare al meglio il vostro sound? Come è stato lavorare di nuovo con lui?

Jens: Beh, lavoriamo da tantissimi anni con Chris Laney e lui sa davvero bene come vogliamo “pompare” le nostre canzoni. Egli sa anche esattamente come catturare alla perfezione i nostri suoni in fase di missaggio e abbiamo davvero apprezzato il tocco che ha saputo dare a questo album. A mio parere, questo è stato uno dei migliori lavori che ha fatto per noi finora! 

LLRNR: Parliamo dei testi dell’album: di cosa trattano? In passato avete celebrato le “Girls Of The 80s“, avete affermato di voler restare “21 Till I Die“, avete detto che gli “Heroes Last Forever“, ma avete affrontato anche temi piùdelicati come in “Children Of The Cross“. Sembra che in questo nuovo album abbiate tratto ispirazione anche da film d’azione e horror, o mi sbaglio? 

Joél: Hai veramente ragione. I testi li scrive Danny e in quest’album lui si è ispirato certamente a tutta la cultura degli anni ’80, compresi i film e la musica di quell’epoca. 

LLRNR: Pur essendo molto giovani, siete tutti grandi fan degli anni ’80. A parte la grande musica di quell’epoca, cosa vi manca di piùdi quel periodo straordinario?

Jens: Beh, io sono il piùgiovane del gruppo, essendo l’unico nato negli anni ‘90. Crescendo, ho letteralmente divorato i grandi film e la grande musica degli anni ottanta e, a volte, penso di essermi perso davvero un gran bel periodo. Ora sembra che ci sia grande voglia di tornare a respirare l’aria di quegli anni ”“ ad esempio col videogioco “Friday the 13^th” e con serie Tv come “Stranger Things”- e spero che anche noi Crazy Lixx si possa dare il nostro contributo a questa operazione nostalgia, almeno nei confronti del nostro pubblico. 

LLRNR: “XIII” e “Live Before I Die” saranno, come detto, presenti sulla colonna sonora del videogioco “Friday the 13^th“; anche il video per “Wild Child” sembra affrontare tematiche horror e mi ricordo che Jens era solito indossare una maglietta di Frankenstein. Siete fan dei film dell’orrore? Vi piacciono di piùi classici film horror, i film slasher degli anni ottanta o i moderni film come “Hostel” o “Saw”? 

Joél: Tutti noi siamo davvero appassionati di film horror e ne abbiamo visti tantissimi nel corso degli anni. Ad essere sincero, preferisco ancora i vecchi film horror rispetto a quelle schifezze basate sulla computer graphic di oggi. Film come “L’Esorcista” o “It” adesso potrebbero essere considerati magari dozzinali, ma restano assolutamente magici per il modo in cui sono stati realizzati e riescono ancora oggi a regalarmi i giusti brividi!

LLRNR: Questo è il primo album in cui sono presenti i nuovi chitarristi Chrisse Olsson e Jens Lundgren: i due hanno portato alcune nuove idee nel suono della band e hanno partecipato al processo di scrittura e arrangiamento dell’album?

Jens: Sì, lo hanno fatto. Quando abbiamo iniziato a provare insieme, abbiamo capito molto in fretta di aver fatto la giusta scelta. Si tratta di due chitarristi di grande talento e sanno bene come ottenere quel suono che stavamo cercando nella produzione dell’album. E’ stata davvero una grande spinta per noi come band e penso che possiate rendervene conto sia sull’album che dal vivo. 

LLRNR: Sfortunatamente la vostra formazione è costantemente cambiata in alcuni elementi da un album all’altro e avete, tra l’altro, contribuito a lanciare le carriere di Vic Zino (ora negli Hardcore Superstar) e Andreas Eriksson (ora negli Inglorious). Quanto è difficile ricominciare ogni volta da capo? Siete ancora in contatto e avete mantenuto buoni rapporti con tutti i vostri ex membri?

Joél: Naturalmente quando si cambia formazione ci sono aspetti sia positivi che negativi. E’ stata durissima quando ci abbandonarono sia Andreas Eriksson che Edd Liam e arrivammo davvero vicini a sciogliere la band! Jens Lundgren aveva già  suonato insieme a noi come rimpiazzo di Edd in un paio di date ed è stato naturale pensare subito a lui come prima scelta: se non fosse stato così, penso che probabilmente oggi non saremmo qui con te a fare questa intervista come Crazy Lixx. Per quanto riguarda i contatti con i vecchi componenti devo dirti che, anche se non ci vediamo o sentiamo tutte le settimane, ogni volta che ci incontriamo non c’è mai cattivo sangue tra di noi. Andy è venuto anche al nostro release party a Stoccolma, ci siamo abbracciati e abbiamo parlato a lungo. Abbiamo buone relazioni con tutti quanti.

LLRNR: Quali sono le vostre canzoni preferite da suonare live? Se doveste scegliere uno dei vostri classici, un brano del nuovo album e una cover, cosa scegliereste?

Jens: Oh, difficile questa domanda”… Vediamo: credo che suonerei “Blame It On Love” come classico, mentre dei brani nuovi mi piacerebbe suonare “Hunter Of The Heart“. E come cover? Mah, forse “The Prisoner” degli Iron Maiden.

LLRNR: I vostri video musicali sono sempre molto curati e mai noiosi. Ideate le sceneggiature da soli? Da dove vi vengono le idee?

Joél: Di solito anche i nostri video sono il risultato di un lavoro d’equipe, ma devo dire che, per gli ultimi due, è stato Danny la persona che piùsi è data da fare per svilupparne le idee e i temi. Il video di “Wild Child” si basa sul tema della canzone, quindi si è trattato piùche altro di curarne i dettagli perché la storia c’era già .

LLRNR: Alle backing vocals dell’album avete avuto altri componenti della scena svedese come Mats Levén, Tåve Wanning, Michael Palace e John Elliott, solo per citarne alcuni. Come è il vostro rapporto con le altre band svedesi?

Jens: Beh, quando si è in giro per il mondo a suonare si incontrano sempre tanti musicisti e, da svedesi, c’è sempre un occhio di riguardo per le altre band del nostro paese: è sempre molto divertente incontrarsi all’estero. Per quanto riguarda le backing vocals, avere tutte quelle voci differenti in background rappresenta sempre un valore aggiunto per ogni canzone.

LLRNR: Quali sono state le vostre band preferite del passato? Quale band vi ha fatto pensare “Un giorno sarò come loro” se ce n’è stata una in particolare?

Joél: Sono sempre stato un fan dei W.A.S.P. e dei Def Leppard, quindi dico loro due!

Jens: Direi Iron Maiden e KISS.

LLRNR: Recentemente siete ritornati al Frontiers Rock Festival. Avete qualche particolare pensiero da condividere con noi a proposito di questo festival?

Jens: Beh, è ”‹”‹un festival bellissimo, c’è sempre un sacco di gente fantastica fra il pubblico e ci piace da matti mischiarci tra la folla, scambiando un po’ di chiacchiere con i fans. Il primo anno eravamo stati il gruppo di apertura, quest’anno abbiamo suonato circa a metà  giornata, quindi la prossima volta dovremmo essere gli headliner, no? (ride-ndr)

LLRNR: Ve lo auguriamo di cuore! Grazie mille per il tempo che ci avete dedicato, ragazzi! Avete un particolare messaggio da inviare ai nostri lettori?

LLRNR: Hello guys and welcome to LongliveRockNRoll. First of all, let’s talk about your new album “Ruff Justice” that came out last month. You said that you’ve tried to recapture the feeling of “New Religion” and I can say for sure that anyone can rely, finding in it the 80s sound and spirit, with all those great hooks and big chorus. Was this intentional or it just came out in a natural way? 

Joél: It was very intentional! We talked a lot about what is Crazy Lixx and the things that defined our sound. “New Religion” is always the album that our fans talk about and when Danny wrote the songs for the “Friday the 13^th” videogame we felt that was the right way to go. Those songs are a little bit darker than our previous ones but they got the feel and the vibe of what we wanted to do and when the rest of the album was on the table we looked for songs that would fill it with tracks that were 80s influenced but also varied in style, since we have always been about that. You have the harder and darker songs like “XIII” and “Kiss Of Judas”, but also the more mellow and “lighter” songs like “Walk The Wire”: so it´s a little bit for everybody that likes this kind of music.

LLRNR: What about the “Ruff Justice” title and the cover of the album. They are also very 80s style, don’t you think?

Jens: Well, as you said the whole album is a journey back to the eighties – the good parts at least – and with the cover we tried to really capture that classic eighties movie posters.

LLRNR: Which songs do you think are the most representative of the new album? Is there a song that you love in a particular way, both lyrically and musically?

Joél: I think the whole album has a diversity and that is something I really enjoy with our albums. I personally love “Walk The Wire”, but I wouldn’t feel bad about playing any of the new songs live since I really feel that every song has a special purpose on the album.

Jens: For the fans I would say either “XIII”, “Snakes In Paradise” and “Walk The Wire”, not only because they are personal favorites, but also because when I read reviews on the album those songs are often mentioned as the stand out ones.

LLRNR: You welcomed back Chris Laney as a producer. The last album was produced by yourself and he just did the mixing. Do you think he could really capture the feeling of your songs? How was working with him again?

Jens: Well, we’ve had a long working relationship with Chris Laney and he really knows in what way we wanna push our songs. He also knows exactly how to tweak the tracks perfectly for us while mixing it and we felt we’ve wanted that seasoning on this album. And in my opinion he did one of his best Crazy Lixx albums so far right now!

LLRNR: Let’s talk about the lyrics of the album: what are they all about? In the past you celebrate the “Girls Of The 80s”, you claimed you want to be “21 Till I Die”, you said that “Heroes Last Forever”, but you also touch more deeper themes as in “Children Of The Cross”. It seems that in this new album you also found some inspiration from action and horror movies, am I wrong?

Joél: You are indeed very right. Danny writes the lyrics and they definitely are inspired from the whole 80ths culture either it´s movies or music from that era.

LLRNR: You are all big fans of the 80s even if you are so young, aren’t you? Apart from the great music of that era, what do you miss the most about that amazing period?

Jens: Well I am the youngest, being the only 90s kid in the band. While growing up I’ve consumed a lot of the great movies and music of the eighties and sometimes I think I really missed it all out. It feels like there’s a huge retro-trend right now – with the “Friday the 13^th” game and Tv series like “Stranger Things”, etc. – and I hope we can bring that nostalgic feeling to our audience as well.

LLRNR: “XIII” and “Live Before I Die” will be on the soundtrack of “ Friday the 13^th” videogame; also the video for “Wild Child” seems to deal with horror themes and I remember Jens used to wear a Frankenstein’s Creature t-shirt. Are you big fans of horror movies? Do you like more the classic horror movies, the slasher movies of the eighties or the new wave of torturing horror (“Hostel”, “Saw”, etc)? 

Joél: All of us are very much fans of horror movies and have seen a lot of them over the years. I actually prefer the old horror movies compared to the CGI-shit that is now. Movies like “The Exorcist” and “It” are cheesy but also magical in the way they were made and I can still see a movie from that era today and still feel a warm chill in my body. 

LLRNR: This is the first album to include the two new guitarists Chrisse Olsson and Jens Lundgren. Did they bring some new fresh ideas to the sound of the band and did they take part to the writing and arranging process of the album?

Jens: Yes they did. When we started rehearsing together we all felt really quick that we’ve made the right choices of members. They are both really talented guitarists and they know how to get those sounds we were looking for on this production. It was a big lift for us as a band and I think you can hear that both on the album and on tour. 

LLRNR: Unluckily your line up always changed from an album to another and you also help to launch the careers of Vic Zino (now in Hardcore Superstar) and Andreas Eriksson (now in Inglorious). How hard is it to start all over again with every new album? Are you still in contact and have good relationships with all your former members?

Joél: Of course it has its positives and negatives when it comes to line-up changes. It was very hard on us when both Andreas Eriksson and Edd Liam left and we were very close to call it quits!

Jens Lundgren had already filled in on two shows and we more or less had him in our minds when it came to fill up the first guitar spot; and if we hadn’t had him already in our minds, I think we probably wouldn’t be here today. When it comes to contact with the boys it differs: we don’t call each other up and talk on a weekly basis, but whenever we meet it´s never any bad blood. Andy was actually on our release party for the album and we hugged and talked for a bit so the relationships are cool.

LLRNR: Which are your favorite songs to play live? If you had to choose one of your classic song, one of the new ones and one cover song, which ones will you choose?

Jens: Oh that’s a tough one… Well I guess I’d do “Blame It On Love” as the classic, I’d love to play “Hunter Of The Heart” as a new one. And a cover? Well, maybe “The Prisoner” of Iron Maiden.

LLRNR: Your amazing music videos are always accurate and never boring. Did you always write the storyboard by yourselves? Where did the ideas come from? 

Joél: We discuss the videos together, but Danny has been the most driven person on the last two videos on what the theme should be. The “Wild Child” video is based on the theme of the song, so it was more a matter on the details in the video. 

LLRNR: On backing vocals you always have other members of the Sweden scene like Mats Levén, Tåve Wanning, Michael Palace and John Elliott, to name but a few. How is your relationship with the other Swedish bands? Is there any band you like in a particular way?

Jens: Well, when you tour you always meet a lot of bands and as a swede you have an eye open for other Swedish bands. It’s fun to meet up abroad you know. And about the backing vocals, it gives the songs a little extra when you get that different vocals in the backgrounds.

LLRNR: Which are your favorite bands from the past? Which band made you say “One day I’ll be like them” if there was one in particular?

Joél: I have always been a fan of W.A.S.P. and Def Leppard so I am going to say those bands!

Jens: I would say Iron Maiden and KISS. 

LLRNR: You recently came back to the Frontiers Rock Festival. Do you have any particular feeling to share with us about that?  

Jens: Well, it’s an amazing festival, always a lot of great people in the audience and we love hanging around with people there. First year we opened up, this year we played in the middle, so next time we should headline right?… 🙂
