Momentum – Hörà°ur à“lafsson, intervista 2015

Dopo il mio solito viaggio in rete e aver conosciuto i Momentum mi decido di contattarli per chieder loro un’intervista. Mi risponde Hörà°ur à“lafsson, Holaf, bassista e cantante della band islandese e accetta di rispondere alle mie domande via mail. Successivamente, avendo notato la sua disponibilità , aggiungo alcune domande tanto per completare la nostra chiacchierata”…

Long Live Rock’n’Roll.it:
Innanzi tutto, complimenti per il vostro album , ‘The Freak Is Alive’. Mi piace molto, al primo ascolto sono rimasto molto sorpreso, davvero bello. La prima cosa che mi ha colpito è stata la copertina, chi l’ha realizzata? Davvero stravagante”…

Hörà°ur à“lafsson (Holaf):
La copertina è una delle nove realizzazioni artistiche dell’album. Ogni brano ha la sua ‘copertina’ e quella che è stata scelta per la cover dell’album riguarda l’ultimo brano ‘Depth Of The Whole’ e sono tutte realizzate da me.

Long Live Rock’n’Roll.it:
Sei anche un pittore?

Holaf:
Ho dipinto in passato, ma adesso sono disegnatore”…

Long Live Rock’n’Roll.it:
Mi spieghi cosa si intende con ‘The Freak Is Alive’?

Holaf:
E’ qualcosa che ha a che fare con qualsiasi persona, in particolare con chi ha modo di poter ascoltare e vivere l’album! Vestiti per bene, pettina le tue sopracciglia, ascolta l’album, leggi i testi e interpreta la copertina. E’ tutto un vortice.

Long Live Rock’n’Roll.it:
Ho trovato questa affermazione sulla vostra pagina facebook: ‘anche se siamo una metal band, in nessun modo descrive la nostra musica poichè la nostra musica va oltre?. Posso dire che I punto di partenza è l’insieme di progressive rock e death metal e poi una ricerca del suono, della potenza e poi”…?

Holaf:
Sì, puoi direlo, ma io continuerei con quanto scritto su facebook: ‘”… e poi la ricerca del suono, la potenza e l’espressione musicale”…’

Long Live Rock’n’Roll.it:
Quindi vuoi dirmi che non ci sono confini nel vostro stile o genere che la vostra musica affronta, nessuno stereotipo.

Holaf:
Esatto. A noi non piace etichettarci con alcuna definizione. Lo facciamo solo per una mera necessità . Crediamo che sia limitante dire che siamo questo o quel tipo di band. Facciamo solo la nostra musica, senza confini e poi successivamente cercare di comprendere in che tipo di categoria musicale poter rientrare. Alla fine è solo musica e colpisce ciascuno in modo differente. Alcuni non sono d’accordo alla definizione di doom o death metal o altro. Qualcuno pensa che la nostra musica sia una cosa e altri credono che sia un’altra”… Per noi è solo Momentum. Non ci consideriamo come le altre band e ci diverte molto vedere e capire come veniamo percepiti dalla gente e come si cerca di giustificare tale percezione.

Long Live Rock’n’Roll.it:
Posso usare la parola non convenzionale parlando di ‘The Freak Is Alive’?

Holaf:
Sì. Carina come definizione.

Long Live Rock’n’Roll.it:
Credi che le atmosfere contenute nell’album siano influenzato dall’ambiente che vi circonda? O siete un po’ depressi, preoccupati”…

Holaf:
Non galoppiamo nelle montagne o navighiamo fiumi di  lava con le nostre canoe o cose del genere. L’ambiente in cui viviamo è parte delle nostre vite e per noi tutto ciò è scontato. Forse siamo influenzati dai lunghi inverni o dal sole a mezzanotte durante le estati, ma se è così è solo nel nostro subconscio.

Long Live Rock’n’Roll.it:
Potresti dirmi qualcosa sul songwriting dell’album e la composizione dei vari brani? E anche a proposito del processo riguardante la creazione dell0album.

Holaf:
Non c’è molto da dire”… La maggior parte della nostra musica vien fuori suonando insieme, lavoriamo tutti insieme fino a quando siamo soddisfati di ciò che vien fuori. Occasionalmente le cosa cambiano  un po’ ma questo non accade spesso. E’ davvero buffo pensare che i brani presenti in ‘Fixation, at Rest’ e T’he Freak is Alive’ siano scritti quasi  nello stesso ordine in cui appaiono su entrambe gli album, forse ci sono stati 2 o 3 casi in cui vi sono state delle modifiche, ma credo che ci sia la volontà  di documentare correttamente il processo creativo”…

Long Live Rock’n’Roll.it:
Siete soddisfatti di ‘The Freak Is Alive’ e qual è la cosa davvero importante da dire?

Holaf:
Siamo molto soddisfatti del nostro album. E’ molto difficile dire quale sia la cosa piùimportante. Probabilmente è differente per ciascuno di noi”… ma, hey non è piùimportante il viaggio della destinazione?

Long Live Rock’n’Roll.it:
Ci sono delle differenze con in vostri precedenti lavori, il vostro album  ‘Fixation, at Rest’, i vostri due EP e il vostro demo?

Holaf:
Sì, forse c’è meno distanza con l’album precedente, ma secondo noi ce ne sono molte con le nostre prime produzioni (o meglio è proprio così).

Long Live Rock’n’Roll.it:
E i testi?

Holaf:
I testi sono stati scritti coerentemente con l’artwork dell’album. La maggior parte di loro sono un mio modo di interpretare l’artwork con cose che in quel momento sono presente nella mia testa. La maggior parte si riferiscono al subconscio, l’auto esplorazione con le nostre problematiche. Deliberatamente, però, sono tutti molto vaghi affinché possano essere interpretati in maniere personale e creare così la propria esplorazione o il proprio viaggio.

Long Live Rock’n’Roll.it:
Questa è la prima volta che chiacchieriamo assieme, anche se via mail, quindi, please, che mi dici del gruppo, perché il nome Momentum? E com’è la vita a Reykjavà­k per un gruppo musicale? Ci sono delle possibilità  di suonare dal vivo e far conoscere la vostra musica?

Holaf:
Bèh potrei dirti qualsiasi cavolata a proposito ma ricordo che il nome è venuto fuori da un’idea per il titolo di un brano, idea che abbiano avuto io e il precedente cantante. In quel periodo stavamo cercando anche il nome giusto per il gruppo e quando l’idea del nome è venuta fuori l’abbiamo proposta agli altri  per sapere cosa ne pensassero.
La vita a Reykjavà­k è molto buona. Posso dire che noi stiamo bene e siamo felici della nastra vita. Essendo una band che vive qui ci sono delle difficoltà . La scena musicale a Reykjavà­k è molto vivace e ci sono molte possibilità  di suonare dal vivo e far ascoltare la nostra musica e lo abbiamo fatto per molto tempo, ma ora ci stiamo concentrando su come fare ad andare in tour senza andare in bancarotta. Ci sono molti festival qui e noi abbiamo anche partecipato a questi eventi. Il piùimportante è quello di Eistnaflug (località  a 700 km da Reykjavà­k e arrivato all’11esima edizione nel 2015, ndr). Questo festival è stato un trampolino di lancio per molte band e noi abbiamo beneficiato suonando in questo festival. Noi ci siamo andati a suonare fin dalla prima volta e nel 2015 sarà  la nostra 11esima partecipazione.

Long Live Rock’n’Roll.it:
State pensando di promuovere il vostro album con concerti all’estero? …magari anche in Italia?

Holaf:
Come ti ho detto prima la nostra principale ambizione è  quella di viaggiare e suonare a nostra musica ma dall’Islanda non è così semplice caricare tutto in macchina e andare in giro a piacimento. E’ molto costoso c’è bisogno di pianificare per bene in anticipo e con accortezza economica per fare ciò che ci piace fare. L’Italia è un bel posto e ci piacerebbe venire a suonare da voi quindi aiutateci a far sì che questo si possa realizzare.

Holaf:
Spero che a voi possa piacere la nostra musica e che ci supportiate in futuro, chi sa, forse un giorno ci incontreremo in un live dei Momentum, magari in Italia”…

So, first of all congratulation for your album, ‘The Freak Is Alive’. I love it but at the first listening I was really surprised. What a nice album”… I was immediately captured by the cover art”… who made it”… really ‘freak’”…

The cover art is one of 9 pieces of artwork for the album. Each song has it’s own artwork and the one on the cover is for the last song on the album ‘Depth Of The Whole’. All of the artwork is made by me…

Long Live Rock’n’Roll.it:
Please, what do you mean with ‘The Freak Is Alive’?

Holaf:
It is something that is coming alive within anybody, particularly the one listening and experiencing the album. Strap on your best socks, comb your eyebrows, listen to the album, read the lyrics and interpret the artwork. It’s all a ride.

Long Live Rock’n’Roll.it:
I found this statement on your facebook page: ’Although we are a metal band that is in no way descriptive of the music as it explores so much more’”… May I say that the starting point of your music is a mix of progressive and death metal and then a research in sounds, power and”…?

Holaf:
Yes, sure you could say that. If I were to follow with a extension: ”…then a research in sounds, power and musical expression.

Long Live Rock’n’Roll.it:
So, you mean there are no boundaries about style or genres in your music, no stereotypes.

Holaf:
Yes definitely. We don’t want to label ourselves as anything. We only do it because of necessity. We believe it is very limiting to say that we are this type of band or that. We just make our music, with no boundaries, and then afterwards maybe try to figure out into what category it might fit. In the end it’s just music and it affects everyone differently. Some people don’t agree that it’s doom or death metal or whatever. Some think it’s more like this and others think it’s more like that. For us it’s just Momentum. We don’t consider ourselves anything like other bands and we just enjoy seeing what connections people find to justify something in their heads.

Long Live Rock’n’Roll.it:
May I use the word unconventional for ‘The Freak Is Alive’?

Holaf:
Yes, I think that’s a pretty fair assumption.

Long Live Rock’n’Roll.it:
”…but do you think those atmospheres are influenced by the environment you live in? or you are a bit distressed, worried”…

Holaf:
We do not go galloping into the mountains or ride our canoes into the lava stream or anything like that. Our environment has been a part of our whole lives and we take it for granted every day. Perhaps we are influenced by the long winters, or the midnight sun in the summertime but if so, it’s subconsciously.

Long Live Rock’n’Roll.it:
What can you tell me about the songwriting and the composition of the songs? And, of course, what about the process of creation of the album?

Holaf:
There’s not that much to tell. Most of our music comes from jamming together, we all work on them together until we feel that we are satisfied with the outcome. Occasionally they change a little bit afterwards but not that often. It’s very funny that the songs on both Fixation, at Rest and The Freak is Alive are almost written in the same order that they appear on the actual albums, there might be 2-3 instances where we change them up but I guess we have some sort of tradition of correctly documenting the writing process”…

Long Live Rock’n’Roll.it:
Are you satisfied about ‘The Freak Is Alive’ and what is the most important thing to say about it?

Holaf:
We are very satisfied with the album. It’s very hard to say what is the most important thing about it. It’s probably different for each one of us. But hey, isn’t it the journey rather then the destination?

Long Live Rock’n’Roll.it:
Are there any differences with your previous works, your album ‘Fixation, at Rest’ and the two EPs and you first Demo?

Holaf:
Yes, there is perhaps less difference now than with our last album but all of our releases sound completely different in our opinion (well, it’s a fact).

Long Live Rock’n’Roll.it:
And what about the lyrics?

Holaf:
The lyrics are written in coherence to the artwork on the album. Most of them are my way of interpreting the artwork along with stuff going on in my head at that moment. They mostly deal with subconsciousness, self exploration dealing with your own shit. But I deliberately make them vague enough for anyone to make up his own interpretation and thus create his own exploration/journey.

Long Live Rock’n’Roll.it:
This is the first time we are having a chat together, even if via mail, so, please, what about the band, why the name Momentum? How is life in Reykjavà­k for a band? Are there any chance to play and spread your music?

Holaf:
Well, I might be bullshitting here but I recall that the name was originally an idea for a song title in a chat between me and our previous singer. At that time we were also looking for a new band name and when this idea came up we liked it and decided to check with the guys how they felt about it and so it was to be. Life in Reykjavà­k is very good. I think it’s safe to say that we are all pretty happy with our lives. As for being a band located here, well, it does have it’s difficulties. The music scene in Reykjavà­k is very lively and there many chances to play and spread the music and we did play very frequently for many years but our main focus today is to make it possible for the band to tour and not go bankrupt while doing it. It is also worth mentioning that we have good festivals in Iceland as well, most notable of which is Eistnaflug. That festival has been a huge springboard for many bands and Momentum are definitely one band that has benefitted by playing that festival. We have been there since day one and 2015 will be our 11th appearance.

Long Live Rock’n’Roll.it:
And are you planning to promote your album with concerts abroad? Maybe in Italy”…

Holaf:
As I said before our main ambition is to be able to travel around and play our music but being from Iceland you can’t just jump into your car and drive where you want. It’s much more expensive and needs to be planned in advance and make financial sense so we can continue doing what we love doing. Italy is a very nice country and we would love to come and play for the Italian people so you all do your very best to help us make that possible.

Long Live Rock’n’Roll.it:

Well, we hope you like the music that we are doing and support the band in the future. Who knows, maybe one day we will see you at a Momentum show, perhaps even in Italy.
